Hot Milk // Silly Goose // Cassyette // Live Review // The 02 Institute // Birmingham
Hot Milk have been on a rapid clime over the last few years, including their Loud and Fast tour of the US, and the bands second full length Album Corporation P.O.P bringing them to new heights, it was damn exciting seeing the band announce their UK tour, including a date at Birmingham’s o2 Institute Main Room, meaning the band have now headlined every room of the venue. Coming along for the ride were Rap-Rock/Nu-Metal 4-piece Silly Goose and Singer-Songwriter Cassyette.
Up first were Atlanta Nu-Metallers Silly Goose, whose set was anything but silly. Infectious energy, crowd surfers from their third song in, and a great sound that’s a love letter to 90’s Rap Rock caught the audience’s attention with ease. Infectious Grooves flooded the room for their half-hour set, and all I thought the entire time was how much I want to see a full headline show from the lads. Definitely the best opening set I’ve seen all year, and a band I cannot state how much you need to see Silly Goose live, especially if you’re a Nu-Metal fan. Phenomenal set. Their new album Keys to the City was released on October 17 via Blue Grape Music.

After the first changeover, we had Cassyette, the British singer-songwriter and her backing band. If you heard the roar of the crowd when she hit the stage, you really wouldn’t be mistaken for believing she was headlining the night, and that was undoubtedly the quality of the entire performance, too. Masterful handling of some small tech issues at the start of the set was just one of the many standout moments of their performance, alongside incredible vocals, catchy choruses, great energy, and I can’t picture a single person leaving the show not being a fan. Extra points, too, for playing an unreleased track. I have a soft spot for musicians who play songs that 90% of a crowd won’t know at a live show.

After the last changeover (and half an hour of trying to fix my lens, which broke during the last set), Hot Milk hit the stage. Within moments, I could see the band’s growth as performers from when I saw them headline the Empire in Coventry back in 2022.
Starting the set with Hell Is on Its Way, the band’s heavier sound from this year’s new album, Corporation P.O.P., creates an oppressive atmosphere that perfectly fits the lyrics and themes the band explores across both the new album and its catalogue. The band’s set flew by as they covered bits from across their entire catalogue, from the aggressive, punky 90 Seconds to Midnight, the 25 and over Emo Anthem HORROR SHOW, and even a re-written, heavier version of Candy Coated Lie$ dubbed Candy Nightmares.
This show, without a doubt, highlighted exactly why Hot Milk have got to the point they have, and that’s down to three things. Their raw honesty, their determination to make whatever music they want, and their unique sound you’ll be pressed to find anywhere else in the scene.
A truly phenomenal night.
