London-born, Vietnamese-Chinese singer-songwriter Hongza excels in crafting the kind of emotionally charged, shoegazing dream pop that can soundtrack all of life’s ups and downs.
“‘Lovesick’ is a track about yearning for someone you’re so deeply in love with but can’t get to because they live hundreds of miles away. The feeling of euphoria when you get to see their face after weeks apart,” says Hongza about his track that is destined to become a Valentine’s anthem for years to come. Both that sense of yearning and a sheer euphoric feel are palpable through the song’s reverb-drenched riffs, driving drums and lush, dreamy melody. It was produced by longtime collaborator Larry Hibbitt (Nothing But Thieves, Sea Girls, Sundara Karma).
To celebrate Hongza’s recent union with new label Killabop, and the international love-fest that is V-Day, they’re giving away a glimpse of what’s to come. You’ll get to download a demo of the massively synthed-up version of ‘Lovesick’ that he’s currently working on for future release, if you subscribe to Hongza & Killabop mailing lists or Youtube.
You can get to know Hongza live and in the flesh at his headline show at The Lexington in London on 4th March. He says: “Growing up in North London, The Lexington has always felt like home! I spent countless nights getting hammered at White Heat and have been lucky enough to open up for a bunch of bands there. I even opened up for VANT in 2023 when he decided to put on an experimental set with a massive dragon. It feels surreal to be on home turf playing at a venue that shaped my youth.” Another opportunity to catch Hongza live will be Jeremy Corbyn’s new Bulletproof Festival, celebrating community and resistance, in East London in June.
