As she prepares for a major breakthrough with her medical-themed new album, this fascinating latest excerpt finds Hannah examining the story of the “The Edinburgh Seven”.

The first group of matriculated undergraduate female students at any British university, The Edinburgh Seven studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh back in 1869. Though pioneering for their time, they were prevented from graduating and qualifying as doctors because of their gender – with an angry mob even gathering at the Surgeons’ Hall the following year to prevent them from sitting their anatomy exam. Delving into this turbulent chapter of history with a song of rage and resistance, Hannah echoes the period with a raw, pulsating piece of music. Of “The Edinburgh Seven”, Hannah says:

“Writing “The Edinburgh Seven” was my way of channeling the untold, fierce story of these incredible women into something that feels raw, alive, and rebellious. I wanted to capture their defiance in a sound that’s gritty and visceral—imagine Tarantino making a film about their journey, marching through a hostile crowd of men throwing dirt and hurling insults as they made their way down Nicholson Street to sit their anatomy exam. The song is swampy rock with a bite, reflecting their fight for a place in medicine when society tried to shut them out. In writing this, I wanted to give them a voice, honor their courage, and bring their story into the modern world with all the grit, determination, and swagger it deserves.”

Produced by Ed Harcourt, “The Edinburgh Seven” is a gritty, swampy rock anthem that brings the rebellious spirit of the first female medical graduates to life and channels the bold, trailblazing energy of these pioneering women who broke down barriers in 19th-century Scotland. Infusing a Tarantino-esque cinematic flair colliding via the defiance of these doctors, the resultant track is a powerful celebration of breaking through glass ceilings, delivered with swagger, grit, and unapologetic strength.

The video was filmed at The Old Operating Theatre in London and Hannah was joined by Ed Harcourt for the performance. Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/8qseLcPgqYo

The track will feature as part of her second full length album, ‘Fragile Creatures’, alongside previous single “Curious Mixtures”. On her upcoming album, the Bristol-based chanteuse invites us to a place where science meets superstition and medicine meets myth, to witness the strength, resilience, and rebelliousness of women through the ages, in the unyielding battle for bodily equality and autonomy.

Speaking about the concepts and themes at play in ‘Fragile Creatures’, Hannah explains:

“This record is both an offering and a tribute to female pioneers in medicine; and an endeavour to honour, and give voice to, the unsung heroines in the history of our health. What struck me most during the research and creation of this album was the deeply ingrained, sinister nature of myth and misconception surrounding women’s health, and the harmful, cyclical dismissal of experiences; decade after decade, century after century, often reinforced by outdated and dangerous practices. My hope is that listeners will not only be intrigued by these stories but also inspired to dig deeper and empowered to challenge the systems that have long ignored or misrepresented women’s voices, as this dismissal remains so prevalent today.”

Mastered at Abbey Road, ‘Fragile Creatures’ sees her continuing her creative partnership with Ed Harcourt, who produces and performs on the record.

Coinciding with the release of the new single is the news of a 2-week residency at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. Hannah will be playing the album in full, performing at The Space at the Surgeon’s Hall on Nicholson Street, name-checked in the song. ABOUT HANNAH ROSE PLATT

Originally from Liverpool, now based in Bristol, Hannah Rose Platt is a singer-songwriter with a wild imagination and a wicked ear for melody.

She released her Xtra Mile Recordings debut ‘Deathbed Confessions’ in 2023; a collection of ghoulish ghost stories, melodious murder ballads, and humorous hammer-horrors. Inspired by classic horror such as Rod Serling’s ‘The Twilight Zone’, the BBC’s ‘Inside No 9’, and the balladeer categories of Samuel Peyps. Produced by Ed Harcourt, Platt distilled her influences into a scintillatingly strange album that stood her far from the pack. Featuring the singles “Feeding Time For Monsters”, “Dead Man On The G Train” and the spellbinding duet “The Mermaid & The Sailor”(with Ed Harcourt)’, it received warm reviews across the board and was praised by The Crack as “twelve murder-ballad tales that are dripping in gothic stylings”.

‘Hypnagogia’ swiftly followed; a partner piece inspired by haunting Nordic folklore, the EP comprised four fully fleshed-out songs produced by Ed Harcourt alongside four spoken-word interludes narrated by British acting talent and BAFTA nominee David Morrissey (Sherwood / The Long Shadow). It was praised by RNR Magazine as “something wicked”.

Touring with Frank Turner, Ed Harcourt, and Chuck Ragan in recent years, Hannah’s live shows are conceptual and captivating in equal parts. Standby for news of new UK shows, very soon…
