“Young Men Need Their Wives” is the raw, empowering new single from HANNAH ROSE PLATT.
One of her most passionate and personal recordings to date, it forms one of the centre-pieces of her upcoming new album ‘Fragile Creatures’ (out 25 April, via Xtra Mile Recordings).

While staying true to the themes of medicine and misogyny at the heart of her conceptual album, “Young Men Need Their Wives” is drawn from a much more personal well of influence. Ultimately pressured by multiple therapists and medical professionals to stay in an abusive relationship during a particularly challenging chapter of her life, this fierce track channels the chaotic, disorienting emotions she felt during that time.
As Hannah explains:
“I wrote “Young Men Need Their Wives” as a fierce declaration that we are all worthy of love that is kind, genuine, and healthy—free from manipulation. Many of the lyrics are drawn directly from the harmful and dangerous advice I was given verbatim by therapists and medical professionals. This song is not just about reclaiming my own voice; it’s also about empowering anyone who has ever felt pressured to stay in toxic situations. It serves as a reminder that we deserve love that lifts us up, and we should never settle for being collateral damage in someone else’s journey of self-discovery.”
With lyrics that cut right to the bone and a score that blends the raw energy of Sonic Youth’s distorted guitars with the soulful, catchy, yet vulnerable sound of The Shirelles; “Young Men Need Their Wives” shakes to the core with its rebellious spirit and defiant message.
A standout moment of her next album ‘Fragile Creatures’, this song is an assertion of independence and strength that turns a painful experience into a powerful call for self-worth and self-liberation. The track will feature on the record alongside previous singles ‘Curious Mixtures’ and ‘The Edinburgh Seven’.

On her next album, the Bristol-based chanteuse will invite listeners to a place where science meets superstition and medicine meets myth, to witness the strength, resilience, and rebelliousness of women through the ages, in the unyielding battle for bodily equality and autonomy. Speaking about the concepts and themes at play in ‘Fragile Creatures’, Hannah explains:
“This record is both an offering and a tribute to female pioneers in medicine; and an endeavour to honour, and give voice to, the unsung heroines in the history of our health. What struck me most during the research and creation of this album was the deeply ingrained, sinister nature of myth and misconception surrounding women’s health, and the harmful, cyclical dismissal of experiences; decade after decade, century after century, often reinforced by outdated and dangerous practices. My hope is that listeners will not only be intrigued by these stories but also inspired to dig deeper and empowered to challenge the systems that have long ignored or misrepresented women’s voices, as this dismissal remains so prevalent today.”
Mastered at Abbey Road, ‘Fragile Creatures’ sees her continuing her creative partnership with Ed Harcourt, who produces and performs on the record.
Coinciding with the release of the new single is the news of a 2-week residency at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. Hannah will be playing the album in full, performing at The Space at the Surgeon’s Hall on Nicholson Street, name-checked in the song. It’s a fitting theatre to showcase the incredible story of The Edinburgh Seven as well the other songs on the album. Dates for the shows are 1st-16th August and tickets are on sale now.
