The entity known as Vomitorial Corpulence was spawned in the underground music scene of Melbourne, Australia at the dawn of the 1990s. The band was featured on the influential The Extreme Truth – Australian Metal Compilation III in 1995 and released their shocking debut album, Skin Stripper in 1998. In his Encyclopaedia of Australian Heavy Metal tome Brian Giffin describes Skin Stripper as “sheer grind chaos” and there’s no doubting the seismic impact that the album had on Australian goregrind and grindcore. While guitarist Paul Green remained a constant presence at the heart of Vomitorial Corpulence, the band’s history is a turbulent one, involving lineup, label and continent changes and their next release didn’t appear until 2006. Karrionic Hacktician was comprised of the tracks that appeared on the …Extreme Truth… compilation, along with some bonus material and remains highly regarded to this day. After contributing fourteen blistering tracks to the 6-Way Sin Decomposition compilation album in 2007, also featuring the likes of Demonic Dismemberment and Eternal Mystery, Vomitorial Corpulence slipped into what appeared to be its final slumber. Then in June of this year there came a shock announcement from Rottweiler Records – after nearly twenty years of silence, Vomitorial Corpulence had returned! With Paul Green now handling all the music and vocals, a new single, ‘Beastial Devourment’ demonstrated in no uncertain terms that the goregrind pioneer remained as devastatingly heavy as ever! And now, at long, long last, the all new Vomitorial Corpulence album is here…brace for impact, as Martyrdomical Symphonanthem bares its teeth!
Introduction and title track, ‘Martyrdomical Symphonanthem’ is an unnerving and sinister first step back into the shattered sanity of Vomitorial Corpulence. Its slow descent into madness is punctured by the proclamation ‘It’s time for the gore!’ And within moments the tsunami of riffs, solos, wild vocals and skull shattering blast beats consumes us, ‘Saint Eulalia: Dissected And Boiled Alive’ crashing into the Slayerized guitars of ‘Isaiah Sawn In Twain’. Each track is a short, violent, perfectly formed and executed explosion of grind, death and thrash, from the batteringly brilliant ‘Saint Bartholomew The Apostle: Flayed Alive’ to the unbalanced grinding frenzy of ‘Beastial Devourment’. Two decades of fermenting riffs and the pent-up need to grind has resulted in an album that is a breathless rush, an unstoppable propulsion through visions of violence. And yet songs like ‘Bedrack Torture Dismemberment’ are more than just simplistic detonations of rage; they are accomplished and complete songs, fiercely focussed and excessively energised, featuring some sensational lead work, irresistible rhythms and exceptional vocals. As ‘Martyrgoreical Barbaric Slaughter’ hits you in the gut, you realise you’re nearly thirty songs deep and Paul Green shows no signs of flagging. ‘Jeremiah Stoned To Death’ is shockingly intense and ‘Martyrium Sanctorum’ opens up some deep, cool grooves – anything goes with Vomitorial Corpulence and everything works. The final headshot is delivered with fortieth track, ‘Splatterdom’ and it leaves your brains in ruins – total and absolute aural destruction. Vomitorial Corpulence are back and blasting!
Martyrdomical Symphonanthem marks the return of a respected name in goregrind and grindcore circles, however it is not a simple reproduction of Vomitorial Corpulence’s past works. Paul Green has matched the adrenaline and velocity of the band’s previous achievements, but he’s surpassed them in terms of song writing, individual performance, invoked aura and teeth-grinding intensity. When Rottweiler Records light the fuse on this grinding magnificence on October 30th, be prepared for an unrelenting assault of breathtaking impact.
