Swedish atmospheric black metal duo Grey Shores have unveiled “The Withering Tree,” the first single from their forthcoming debut album Dark Waters of Night, due out September 4. The new track premiered at Decibel, which praised Grey Shores for “juxtapose[ing] harsh black metal sounds with post-metal ambient soundscapes, clean singing and ample melody.” The magazine added that “The Withering Tree will appear on the outfit’s self-released seven-song debut, Dark Waters of Night, which further explores contrasting themes of melancholy melodies and abrasive harshness.” Listen to “The Withering Tree” here. Speaking about the song, guitarist and vocalist Martin Andersson explains: “As with several songs on this album, this one started with Vilhelm sending me an acoustic passage he had been working on at home. I picked up on his initial idea and started adding black metal elements to it, building on the original harmonies. We then continued working on it together, exploring the dynamics between the harsher parts and the atmospheric and ambient sections. The lyrics deal with grief and personal loss, trying to put words on the sensation of the world suddenly disappearing from under your feet.” Formed in 2023 by Martin Andersson and Vilhelm Andersson, Grey Shores may be a new name, but both musicians have spent years shaping Stockholm’s underground metal scene through bands such as Seas of Years and Astrophobos. Their shared experience has culminated in a debut that feels remarkably mature, confident, and emotionally powerful. Written and recorded over the course of three years, Dark Waters of Night is the product of an uncompromising creative vision, one that seeks to unite atmosphere, melody, and extremity into a single, cohesive journey. The album was mixed and mastered by Jari Lindholm (Enshine, Exgenesis, Seas of Years), whose production further amplifies the record’s haunting atmosphere and emotional impact. While listeners may recognize echoes of Dissection, Opeth, Summoning, Alcest, Katatonia, and Rotting Christ, Grey Shores avoid mere homage.
