11th April 2025 – Emerging as a vibrant force in Manchester’s indie music scene, Florentenes have today released their dynamic new single ‘What It Takes’. Listen here.

The track marks the third release from their highly anticipated second EP, HOMEGROWN, due 16th May 2025, and continues the band’s momentum as one of the most exciting new acts of the year.

‘What It Takes’ is a punchy, energetic indie gem, blending catchy melodies with a sense of authenticity. Lead singer William’s distinctive raspy vocals truly capture the raw emotion of the song which builds dynamically into a chorus that explodes with infectious hooks with harmonies, making the lyrics feel both personal and anthemic. The guitar solo in the outro erupts like a burst of raw energy, cutting through the mix with a fiery intensity.

Fronted by William Smith (vocals, songwriting), Florentenes also features Luke Holding (lead guitar), Harry Stubbs (bass), and Liam Fiddy (drums). What began as bedroom jam sessions between Smith and Holding has evolved into a powerhouse band with a distinctive, anthemic sound.

Speaking on the single, Luke says “What It Takes is one of the very first songs I wrote – originally inspired by ‘Dead Boys’ by Sam Fender, the song quickly became a 70s-influenced rock song, where Pink Floyd meets Fleetwood Mac. The lyrics explore an arrogant, closed-minded view on the struggles of addiction that unfortunately many people have. The track starts slow, and quickly builds into a huge chorus and a massive, up-tempo ending.”

Having sold out their debut headline show at Manchester’s iconic Deaf Institute on 12th March and shared stages with Jamie Webster, The Royston Club, and Sundara Karma on their farewell tour, Florentenes have already established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. Earlier this year, the band were selected for Abbie McCarthy’s Future Karma series and were highlighted as ‘Ones To Watch’ for 2025, performing at The Lower Third in London. Their debut EP garnered impressive editorial support from Spotify, landing spots on Hot New Bands, Shockwave, and We Are Manchester.

Florentenes have recently completed a run of live shows, including support slots with The Guestlist and Red Rum Club throughout March, and they’ve already secured festival appearances at Feel The Noise 2025, Liverpool Sound City, Neighbourhood Weekender, and more. The band has also recently announced that they’ll be supporting Stanleys at Liverpool’s Arts Club on 26th April. Remaining tickets available here.
