In your world of manicured lawns and polite conversation, of averted gazes, upturned noses and disdain for those without a matching silver spoon, I am the vermin in your cellar. I am the blood on your ball gown. I am the screaming, spitting rat that will not toe the line, that will never bend the knee or bow my head in shame…
Blasting out of Leicester, UK Feral State are an adrenaline infused speedball of rage, defiance, attitude and riffs. Having previously fired out a string of split releases and a self titled debut album which had Louder Than War declaring “this is how hardcore punk should sound”, it’s time for album number two – II. If anyone was expecting an easing up on the pace, a gentler, more welcoming sound or diversions into jazzy, prog rock territories then you clearly haven’t been listening… A more than appropriate air raid siren welcomes us to II, which kicks off with first single ‘Concrete’ – and ‘kicks off’ is definitely the appropriate phrase here. A gritty guitar sound, a furious vocal attack, breathless, head-caving drums…this is Feral State but even better than before! The tracks come at you fast and hard, ‘Constant Terror’ demanding movement and delivering an incredible rush, ‘Slow Decay’ with its brief guitar solo like a snarl of barbed wire, ‘Scab’, incandescent with rage and fury, ‘Nuclear’ which opens with an absolutely savage riff before simply exploding…utterly blistering, so adrenalized your heart could burst. What Feral State have delivered with II is more than how hardcore punk should sound…it’s so right, so defining, it’s dirt under the fingernails, blood in the mouth, life affirming power. It’s the exhilarating, cathartic thrill of the pit captured forever. When the thrashing rage of ‘Survival Game’ is unleashed you’ll either be destroying everything around you in a blissful berserker state, or be pinned back in your chair grinning through the violent velocity. II is an album that burns with the spirit of the past, but never sounds anything less than vital, vibrant and rampantly relevant.
With a sound so raw, real and untamed it could sink its stained and broken teeth into your face, thanks to the recording, mixing and mastering of Ian Boult (Shrykull, Mage, Foul Body Autopsy etc) and some stunning cover art from the brilliant Stonegeist that captures the essence of this incendiary band, II will be released by Road To Masochist on September 26th, on vinyl and digital formats. You cannot afford to miss this one.
