Upcoming Halifax trio EEVAH will release their new EP ‘I Didn’t See It Coming’ on May 22nd digitally and on limited 12 inch single, order here.
Having recently completed a sold-out UK tour, EEVAH will launch the EP with a gig at Trades Club in Hebden Bridge on May 23rd. Building a reputation for their merchandise as well as their music, EEVAH will be selling their wares at Gorilla in Manchester on May 25th as part of Tim Burgess’s Merch Market.
Comprised of Nicole Hope Smith (vocals, bass), Fay Clayton (drums), and Embrace guitarist Richard McNamara, EEVAH create music that bridges the gap between introspective lyricism and infectious, stadium-sized anthems. Produced and engineered by McNamara at Magnetic North Studios in Halifax, the new EP combines the moody atmospherics of Wolf Alice with the shimmering dream pop of London Grammar.
The EP’s lead single “I Still Think Of You” received a 6Music play from Chris Hawkins, while latest single “If It Ain’t You” has so far had two plays on Radio 1 by Jess Iszatt and is on the playlist at Amazing Radio. EEVAH are recording a session for BBC Introducing Leeds & Sheffield which airs on May 15th.
Out with the EP, the title track “I Didn’t See It Coming” is magisterial in scope, an emotional epic that evokes something of the spirit of Richard’s other band. He explains, “For such a long time in EEVAH I guess I’ve kind of shrunk away from the whole Embrace connection, mainly because I want to do something that’s uniquely EEVAH. Then one evening I was skipping through YouTube when I came across an interview with Birdy where she said that Ryan Tedder, her producer and co-writer, had suggested approaching the guitar part on their track ‘Wings’ a bit like ‘Gravity’ by Embrace. Then two videos later, I caught a Holly Humberstone track that was kinda coming from the same ‘Embrace-y’ place, at least beat-wise, and it just hit me – if anyone’s allowed to sound like Embrace, it’s me.”
“The song itself is about being suddenly rejected and trying to make sense of what happened. Didn’t I do everything right, wasn’t I there when I needed to be? I’m trying to find the words and you don’t even want a conversation. In the end it makes you question yourself, who am I to let this happen, where was I? What was I doing? And all you can come up with is, ‘I was blind sided, I didn’t see it coming.’”
The DIY ethos has always been a core part of EEVAH and since their first headline tour in April 2024, they have continued to release music each month through Patreon, where they have created a space to document their journey and spend time with their fans – https://www.patreon.com/eevah
