Defects – Goliath (Official Audio)

Fast rising UK metallers Defects have revealed the song “Goliath,” digitally for the first time. The track was previously only available on the physical CD and vinyl formats of their debut album, ‘Modern Error,’ which was released in May, this year via Mascot Records. You can listen to the song HERE. Watch a teaser of it HERE.

They will also be taking on their October/November UK ‘The Bloodline’ tour next month. The support will come from Profiler and Knife Bride. The tour will begin on 19 October in Glasgow (Classic Grand) and call through Newcastle (The Cluny), Manchester (Rebellion), Leeds (Key Club), London (O2 Islington Academy 2), Bristol (Exchange). Oxford (Jericho Tavern) and finishes on 7 November in Birmingham (Flapper). Tickets are available from HERE.

“Goliath” is one of the heaviest songs on the album, both musically and lyrically. Talking about the track, singer Tony Maue says; “Goliath was written during the middle of COVID. I had randomly been contacted by my mother and it really affected me. The last thing I wanted was contact after everything that happened. For me there’s too much water under the bridge. The person she was/is I can’t be around. The song is to serve as a pillar to basically say ‘leave me and my life alone’.”

Modern Error is breathtakingly raw with emotion. Conceptually, it is a deeply cathartic album that acts as a vessel for singer Tony Maue to organise his thoughts on the trauma of being taken into care at a young age. Threaded through the album are Maue’s experiences, how the five members of the band are all connected, and why, at this moment, right now, is the right time for this band to exist. For themselves as much as anyone else.

The album has already hit over 1m Spotify streams and they’ve picked up support from BBC Radio 1, Kerrang! Radio, Primordial Radio as well as Metal Hammer, Kerrang Magazine, Distorted Sound and more.

The band have spent the summer with blistering sets on the festival circuit, playing at Download (UK) and Graspop (Belgium) as well as tours with Of Mice and Men and Orbit Culture this year. They have also played with the likes of Bullet for My Valentine, Funeral for a Friend and In Flames.

As they prepare to go on tour with Profiler and Knife Bride next month, Maue says; “It’s hard to sing songs like Goliath, but I have my brothers on the road with me every step of the way. Some nights are easier than others. Some can be heavy for me. But it’s the way it is when you express through an art form. Without this I wouldn’t be able to be on the road doing what I love. Life on the road is amazing. You see things and places in a way that you could never experience the same way if it was just a holiday. You really go to these places and live it. Playing amazing shows and meeting awesome people along the way. I could never ever turn away from music now. It’s like an addiction.”

From the album, they released the singles, Echo Chamber which offers closure to Maue,  Modern Error paints a poignant message about the path the world is heading down and Lockdown captures mental challenges. The bulldozing Broken Bloodlines announced their signing to Mascot records, which followed  Dream Awake, Scapegoat and End of Days.

All five members have their stories – Tony Maue (Vocals), Luke Genders (Guitar), James Threadwell (Guitar), David Silver (Bass) and Harry Jennings (Drums) – and the album hits with the heaviness and aggression of Lamb Of God and Machine Head, a Linkin Park-like sense of melody, and a touch of Bring Me The Horizon’s fearlessness. For all its heavy subject matter, it burns with vitality, power, passion and woven within is their outlook on the world.
