Part-inspired by the seminal Madchester movement of the late 80s and 90s, the track is now accompanied by suitably vintage-styled visuals. Directed by New Visions’ Dylan Brannigan, the “Boo” music video arrives like a lost cut from the Granada music show, So It Goes… but with a supernatural twist.
Speaking about the concepts behind the video, L.G. Galleon of Dead Leaf Echo explains:
“The Boo video intensifies the viewer’s visions of paranoia and fear about losing a loved one as they are trapped within a television screen forever set to watch themselves on repeat.”
An indie-dance anthem with a deliberately retro feel, the track is intended as a tribute to the late Denise Johnson (Primal Scream / New Order), the Mancunion powerhouse vocalist who blessed some of the greatest Madchester-era records with her inimitable character. Scratch beneath its Hacienda-primed sound though and you’ll find an altogether darker and paranoid lyrical substrata. As L.G. Galleon reflects:
“Boo was written five years ago when I was pressed by my girlfriend at the time to write a joke “Manchester” song with a hook. It quickly morphed into a partial ode to Denise Johnson who passed away during the pandemic and also into a creepy Halloween song about surveillance, discovery and scaring your “Boo” with the truth about all your hidden secrets.”
“Boo” will be the title-track of a brand new EP from the Brooklyn collective confirmed for release on the PaperCup Music label (Drug Couple, UV-TV) early next year. A five track release, it will be released both digitally and on vinyl by Moon Sounds Records and will feature new artwork from V23’s Timothy O’Donnell (The Birthday Party, Pale Saints), Roy Burns III (Stiff Little Fingers, Sun Kil Moon), and Gary Prendergast (cutshapemake).

Dead Leaf Echo is a music/art collective that released their debut LP ‘Thought and Language’ in 2013. That premier album was strongly influenced by many 4AD acts, brought into sharp focus by the mixing of John Fryer (Lush, NIN, Depeche Mode) and featuring artwork by 4ADs legendary designer, V23’s Vaughan Oliver (Pixies, Bauhaus), which further enhanced their strong aesthetic connections to that label.
In 2019, the band had just wrapped a tour of the West Coast featuring a performance at KEXP’s “John in the Morning” and flew back to NYC to begin recording their third LP ‘The Mercy of Women’. Planning to release the record and tour Europe in the Autumn of 2020, the band’s preparations were scuppered by the outbreak of the pandemic. Using the down time to remain creative, Dead Leaf Echo finished recording the rest of the EP while in lockdown from both their home and practice studio. James Aparacio (Spiritualized, Depeche Mode) mixed the EP while Jeff Berner (Psychic TV, Shilpa Ray) did the final records at Studio G. Joe Lambert (Blondie, Deerhunter) was brought in to master.
Nearly a decade on from their first release, Dead Leaf Echo maintain a distinctive ethos to embrace their idols while still forging their own sound. Returning with the single “Boo” and with an eponymous new EP slated for 2023, standby for further new music from Dead Leaf Echo in the coming months.
