Watch Michael & Margo Timmins acoustic performance of Cowboy Junkies’ “Shadows 2,” from the band’s upcoming release Such Ferocious Beauty. Of the track, Michael Timmins says, “The song was inspired by the DH Lawrence poem Shadows. He wrote a series of poems contemplating his death as he approached the end of his life. I wrote the song as our Dad was falling deeper into his dementia and was losing the world around him. “Shadows 2” starts from the point of view of the song’s character (my Dad), watching his world disappear, and at the end flips to the point of the story-teller (me), watching him disappear.” The video for “Shadows 2” a live acoustic performance by Michael and Margo Timmins.

Such Ferocious Beauty, the band’s first release of new material in five years has already received early praise. NPR’s All Songs Considered featured the track “What I Lost” with Bob Boilen exclaiming “I have loved this band for so long.” Kyle Meredith (NPR/Consequence of Sound/WFPK) agrees, “Cowboy Junkies have made some of the coolest music of all time and Such Ferocious Beauty stands as one of their greatest accomplishments yet.” UNCUT awarded the album 8/10. Such Ferocious Beauty is vintage Cowboy Junkies and another dimension from the lo-fi Canadian band comprised of siblings Margo, Michael and Peter Timmins and lifelong friend Alan Anton. Beauty is a rumination on aging, losing parents, facing mortality and creating space for one’s life in the midst of the ruin that comes from merely living.
