Countervela Release Spiralling New Single ‘Least Expected Turns (Casadh Gan Choinne)’

Traditional Irish music and post-metal might not seem like the most immediate bedfellows, but on their new single ‘Least Expected Turns (Casadh Gan Choinne)’, Countervela blend the two and in the process produce a piece of music hauntingly beautiful and crushing in equal measures. Following on from 2025 singles ‘Roseblossom’ and ‘Everything All’, the band’s new single finds them fully embracing the traditional Irish sounds they were raised with alongside the heavier bands they gravitated towards in their youth. Even going so far as to blend Irish and English language lyrics in the track. The band collaborated with Gráinne Twohig and the late Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin (who also appears in a spoken word section) on the Irish language lyrics. In the process the band brought on board Berlin-based singer Eimeara to sing this portion of the lyrics. The juxtaposition of Eimeara’s ethereal tones and melodies against the heavier and forceful vocals from Ciaran Colton, provide a depth to track that helps it stand out amongst its contemporaries.

Featuring members from highly respected, now defunct, Belfast post-metal band Stand-up Guy, Countervela formed in 2002. Comprised of Ciaran Colton (guitar/vocals), Conor Mullan (drums/backing vocals), Mike Ahern (guitar/back vocals) and Philip Donnelly (bass/backing vocals). The band took their name from Vela, a character from a childhood favourite sci-fi film, Krull. In keeping with the sci-fi theme, the band now incorporate a constellation named Vela into their logo and artwork. Following the release of two EPs in the late 2000’s the band took an extended hiatus, in the process they reignited their creativity and got to writing. Previously released singles ‘Roseblossom’ and ‘Everything All’ marked their return and now, new single ‘’Least Expected Turns (Casadh Gan Choinne)’ comes just ahead of a full album release planned for later this year.

‘’Least Expected Turns (Casadh Gan Choinne)’ begins with two gentle melodies wrapping around each other played over a shimmering back drop. It feels like the magic of a new morning, light splitting the clouds, cutting through the trees and illuminating a sleeping world. Philip’s bass and Conor’s drums join adding considerable weight to proceedings, dark against the initial light. Eimeara’s vocals feel like a ghostly half-forgotten whisper as they float atop the music. She sings ‘Tarrainge siar ar ais,Go dtí an tobar, Ina snámh an gheallúint’ (pull back again, to the well, in it swims the promise) reading as both a promise and a warning. The song is unhurried in arriving at the inevitable crushing flood, it moves and grows naturally before a short piano break and the band join with full force. It’s not a bullet-belt-Metallica kind of heavy, it feels organic and weighty, like the crashing waves of a lumbering tide. Ciaran’s vocals act as an opposing point-of-view creating a dual narrative within the song. Lyrically the song is about rebirth and of coming together,  walking a path with an uncertain destination, not knowing where you will emerge but being changed by the experience. Mike and Ciaran’s guitars are sparse, tension and release even within riffs creates massive space and weight, and in doing so adds to the heft of the track. Sounds rise and fall as the track progresses, vying for attention one minute before folding back into the sonic landscape

In ‘Least Expected Turns (Casadh Gan Choinne)’ Countervela have created one of the most exciting songs to be released on the Irish heavy music scene in 2026. Combining traditional Irish influences alongside more traditional post-metal gives the track an incredible depth and weight, both sonically and emotionally. There’s an inherent sense of nature in the band’s music, organically heavy without having to relate to over-produced double kick and super-compressed guitars. They say ‘Least Expected Turns, for us, evokes rural imagery and of being on a path of uncertain destination. The video mirrors this by taking an excursion to the water’s edge, while the single’s artwork refers to this sense of jeopardy, uncertainty and of acknowledging that at times we need the help of others.’

With three singles released from the album, Countervela are already proving why they are ones to watch and a vital voice on the Irish heavy music scene.
