The Windy City punk purveyors returned in August with their first collection in seven years, and fans haven’t had to wait long for a visual treat to go with it. “The Day You Left” strikes a nostalgic key, with a light-hearted take on moving on from failed relationships of past.

Discussing the personal nature of the EP, lead vocalist Chris Envy shares: “We put a lot of hard work into ‘Haverstraw’ and it ended up as the best record I have ever made. Every person in this band put their whole self in and it reflects as much when you listen to it. Lyrically, I think it’s the most meaningful record I’ve made and that probably translates to why it means so much to me.”

Hailing from the vibrant musical landscape of Chicago, Showoff, emerged in the late 1990s, led by vocalist Chris Envy and drummer Dan Castady, Graham Jordan and Dave Envy would complete the original quartet. The band’s ascension came during pop-punk’s formative era and as early adopters of the now classic iteration of the genre, Showoff’s tracks are adorned with infectious melodies and emotive lyricism.

After signing to Madonna’s Maverick Records (Warner Music Group) label, Showoff made their major label debut with 1999 full-length Showoff, a collection which resonated with a blend of punk energy, pop sensibility, and emotionally charged lyrics. The Windy City outfit’s ability to craft anthemic choruses and deliver heartfelt performances is mirrored by their live show, which saw the band forge an unbreakable and longstanding bond with their fans.

Whilst their sound has continued to evolve over the years that followed, Showoff’s hook-laden brand of pop-punk has stayed true their roots. Wish You Were Her (2000), Waiting For You (2006) and Midwest Side Story (2017) each showcasing the band’s sonic progression.

And while 2024 sees Showoff nod their past and the quarter century since their self-titled record, moreover it’s a celebration of the now, and new EP Haverstraw.

The collection is a thoughtful nod the melodic punk soundscape present on Showoff, but one which stands firmly rooted in the now. Plush hooks and soaring melodies are met with pacey riffs across six stellar tracks, from Drive-Thru Records leaning “Crimson” to the coming-of-age anthem “Shaken”.

Fittingly for a genre that embraces nostalgia and craves new music in equal measure, Showoff are back with a aplomb.
