Brutus have taken a sizable leap forward with their recent tracks ‘Liar’ and ‘Dust’, both of which preview the October 21st release of their new album ‘Unison Life’ via Hassle Records / Sargent House. The band’s evolution now continues as they share a fresh new track from the album in the shape of ‘Victoria’.
‘Victoria’ symbolises the sudden bursts of intensity that are a core part of Brutus’s sound. Twangy, Pixies-style desert noir guitar patterns whip into the shimmering, post-rock layers of its chorus, which is further strengthened by Stefanie Mannaerts’ impassioned vocals. As with the rest of the ‘Unison Life’ album, which explores the plausibility of achieving a contented, fulfilling life, the lyrics to ‘Victoria’ pose questions rather than present answers, with Stefanie setting the tone with opening statement “Teenage, problems, it’s your call, to face them”. Is feeling the uncertainty of your teenage years while twenty-something a failure? Or is it inevitable in a society in which independence is ever harder to achieve?
Stefanie says, “‘Victoria’ is about getting older. You know grown-up life is lurking around the corner, but you’re not afraid of what’s coming, because we’re all going to go down together.”
‘Victoria’ contains the lyric, “This is our unison life, my friend, this is the end,” which inspired bassist Peter Mulders to suggest ‘Unison Life’ as the album’s title.
Peter adds, “‘Victoria’ has always felt nostalgic for us. Back to the old Brutus days. The guitar riff has been around since 2013, but it is only now that it shines in a full song. What can be seen as a quieter song with a normal song structure, turned out to be a huge step for us to take. We can’t hide behind effects, tempo changes, shouts or blasts.”
For the ‘Victoria’ video, Brutus travelled around Belgium with director Jonas Hollevoet in search of the nostalgic balance between the young and the old, being alone and together. It sees the band members (and occasional guests) holding signs featuring its lyrics in places where people are simply living in the moment. The reaction of the public around them is fascinating throughout, with some looking on quizzically, others ignoring them altogether, and the occasional group desperate to be part of the action.
Brutus approached the writing and recording of ‘Unison Life’ with a laser-sharp focus. Tighter, heavier and relentlessly direct, the result is a distillation of everything Brutus excel at and a blistering illustration of a boundary-pushing band at the top of their game.
‘Unison Life’ is available to pre-order HERE. The band’s official store offered three different limited edition vinyl formats, each with their own striking coloured designs.
Brutus recently announced the following UK tour dates, which represent their first shows here in over three years. Remaining tickets are available HERE. Their first show of 2023 comes with a homecoming show at Ancienne Belgique in Brussels.
