Bristol’s Plague Pit only formed in 2024, but already they are set to unleash their skull-crushing debut EP – the dank and cavernous A Whispered Curse. Their earliest expulsions of noise saw them treading a blackened hardcore path for first demo ‘Give In To Death’, but ferocious live shows alongside the likes of Coffin Mulch and Thou began to lead them into bleaker, bitter and altogether more dangerous territories…which ultimately resulted in the rampaging, harrowing horror of A Whispered Curse. The EP begins with ‘The Seventh Bell’, darkly majestic and rife with dread portent before it breaks out into a feral attack of encrusted death metal fervour. ‘Womb Of Orchids’ follows in a miasma of jarring distortion, rot, rust and devastation, switching between crust punk violence and pounding, monolithic beats before bleeding out into a dark ambient ending – which is shattered in turn by the onslaught of the death driven ‘The Weeping God’. Collapsing pace, measured melancholy, melodic guitar lines and howls of feedback… into the brilliant bass intro of ‘A Whispered Curse’ with its monstrous riffs and graveyard mystery, monolithic stature and cold mist atmosphere. An ending in damp soil and broken teeth, old blood and stained promises. A Whispered Curse is shocking, thrilling, haunting and addictive…an incredible welcome to the dubious pleasures of the Plague Pit.
Plague Pit have joined the ranks of pilgrims on the Road To Masochist and the fast rising label will release A Whispered Curse on 10” transparent red vinyl on October 3rd, with Eggy Tapes providing a cassette alternative, or addition.
