BREAKKAWAY RETURN WITH ETHEREAL GENRE-BENDING SINGLE “RUN AWAY WITH ME”

BREAKKAWAY RETURN WITH ETHEREAL GENRE-BENDING SINGLE  “RUN AWAY WITH ME

Today, NYC’s breakkaway release their follow-up single, “Run away with me,” a slow-blooming cacophony that blurs the lines between rock, ambient pop and glitchy, hyperpop textures. Vocalist Jessica Li’s hushed, weightless vocals expose the raw tension of two people unable to be there for themselves, let alone each other, “but I can’t forget / how you didn’t bother with a birthday text / I can’t feel my body when you’re in my head.” The band intertwines fervent yearning, wrapped in an intoxicating mix of skittish electronic beats and bass-heavy metal.

Li shares, “’ Run away with me’ is a song I wrote at 17, capturing what it meant to be a teenager for me: struggling to feel anchored anywhere, small acts of rebellion, and friendships bigger than romantic love. Looking back from my early 20s, the song feels like my own coming-of-age story, full of a beautiful and tender kind of angst.”

Pulling inspiration from hyperpop heavyweights underscoresJane Remover, and Brakence, producing a seamless blend of digicore, prog-pop and emo elements. breakkaway strives to create a space in which people can “breathe, reflect, and escape.”

breakkaway formed in 2022, while its founding members attended a US arts academy, arriving from as far afield as China, France and Mexico. “I think for all of us it was the first time in our lives where we found ourselves in a place that music and art was OK to pursue,” Li says. Crucially, too, they found each other: kindred spirits for whom, as Li attests, the creation of music is “an extension of our existence.” Over cheap takeout and movie nights, the band would stitch together the rich layers of the breakkaway blueprint. Little wonder their music is imbued with such cinematic qualities, in its own way, a soundtrack to the daydream visuals it conjures.

breakkaway is in Li’s words about creating art with intent; art with a clear “philosophy” that informs not just music, but an entire aesthetic. The band’s expanse of musical influences is mirrored in other mediums, be it literature (Kazuo Ishiguro, Roland Barthes), poetry (Richard Siken, Ocean Vuong), fashion (Alexander McQueen, Yohji Yamamoto), film (Wong Kar-wai, Michel Gondry), photography and more.

breakkaway is Jessica Li, Case Fadell, Romain Dammann, Jorge Gonzalez Diez Gutierrez, and Ethan Chan.
