Brazilian punk-rocker KAREN DIÓ releases cover of CHAPPELL ROAN’s ‘Stupid’

Karen plays Download Festival and 2000 Trees this summer

Fresh off a UK & European tour supporting Limp Bizkit, Brazilian punk-rocker, Karen Dió, has released two special covers, following their premiere as part of Amazon’s Artists to Watch 2025 series.

Speaking of her choices, Karen shares, “it was really exciting to get this opportunity especially when Amazon showed interest to record not just an English song, but also a Portuguese song as well.

For the English song I chose Chappell Roan. She has been a real inspiration, I simply adore her. When I was working on the version of “Casual” I didn’t want to simply do a cheap punk rock version of her song, I wanted it to really kick ass. The original almost has this “denial phase” feeling when you’re breaking up a relationship, so I tried to work on the “anger phase” of it. There is nothing more punk than Drag Queens and queer love.

Pitty is one of my inspirations as to why I got into music in Brazil! She is an icon! When I had to think about covering a Brazilian song, I didn’t think twice. I know “I Wanna Be” is not one of her most famous songs but the song is so good and the lyrics are so real! I remember myself, when I was 13 years old, listening to this song over and over again on my Walkman. I love everything about it!”

KAREN DIÓ – Casual

Nothing is permanent, and no one knows that better than Karen Dió.

“I have to be so unattached to friends, things, and objects,” Dió admits, after moving numerous times growing up and whilst starting her music career. The Brazilian punk rocker on the rise has always lived with transient energy, but especiallyl ately, as she adjusts to the ebb and flow of life after having her July 2023 single “Sick Ride” go wildly viral.

“Sick Ride” is a little bit outside what I normally do,” Dió admits. It was quite out of my world and I really didn’t know what it was going to be. When I saw allthe great feedback and millions and millions of people watching and playing the songs and stuff…it’s just crazy.”

Crazy might even be an understatement she admits, after catching the attention of some of her all-time favourite artists like Sum 41, Incubus, Kenny Hoopla, and even… Fred Durst. An eclectic list, yes, but a testament to the mass appeal Dió has conjured up with her music magic.

And sowith the support of a few famous friends, her new label (Hopeless Records), and high praise from international media, Dió is proudly bringing the brimming punk rock scene in Brazil to the world. Representing her Latin roots is, perhaps, the most important part of her artistry. “If I can open that door for Latin American artists, then I’ve accomplished my goal,” she says.
