Born Of Osiris // Within Destruction // Aversions Crown // Larcenia Roe // Through Shadows – EU/UK Tour Live Review // Belfast

Here we are once again back at The Limelight – this time, The Limelight II, for a packed bill of savage bands to break one nicely into the weekend spirit!

It’s an early start and I mean early, I’m leaving the house at 5:30 to get my cute ass up to Belfast through teatime traffic to get to the limelight for the doors opening at 6:30 pm – not gonna happen so I arrive with late five mins to go before US deathcore band Larcenia Roe hit the stage, the drummer is actually giving the sound guy a thumbs up sayin they’re ready to go by the time I get my camera outta the bag and get myself ready to capture this madness! Madness it is, these guys are fucking brutal! The guys kick off all wearing masks in the vein of Slipknot and the likes but my the end of the first song the two guitarists have issued those las they’re sweating their asses off laying down a killer soundtrack that will blow more than the faces off all who ventured out early this evening, I’d be surprised if there’s any skin left on the Belfast crowd after this pummelling. All the way from Raleigh, North Carolina, to Belfast, Larcenia Roe brought their fuckin A game! A short but very sweet set left everyone in the room with no doubt how this evening’s going to go!

Up next, Aversions Crown, all the way from Brisbane, Australia, these cats bring another level of destruction to The Limelight in Belfast with a far more frenetic pace and level of intensity to their performance. Larcenia Roe was all about the pleasure delaying, whereas the guys wanna fuck you and fuck you hard! Tenacious D would be proud! Now these cats haven’t released a full-length since 2020, but did release a new EP, ‘A Voice From The Outer Dark,’ and are treating us to some music from the new EP. It’s crazy to think these guys are all the way from Oz, standing here in Belfast on the Thursday night, slaying the place with their own brand of Deathcore, cray cray, if I wasn’t standing here watching it for myself, I’d have thought a dingo ate my baby!

Next, we have Slovenian Metalcore monsters Within Destruction, and sweet baby Jesus, if you needed a palate cleanser after the first two bands, this is it ! These guys blend Metalcore and anime / Japanese-influenced metal, and it is a thing of beauty! Just what the doctor ordered after two hefty and intense performances from Larcenia Roe and Aversions Crown, Within Destruction has a lighter vibe but still brings all that heft that’s required to be on a bill such as this. Their latest recording, Animetal, dropped last year, and they open with the total track and don’t look back, unleashing a powerful performance with all the charisma and charm of a European band as you’d expect.  The blend of guttural vocals from Rok and the clean from Howard sets them apart from the other bands on the bill who whet the appetite tonight, but now we are into the business end of proceedings, and shizzle has got real and Within Destruction are blistering live! Their blend of EDM/Electronica and Metalcore has The Limelight ripped to shreds and on a school night too! #nosleeptillbedtime

From one end of the spectrum to another when headliners Born Of Osiris land on our stage, strobetastic lighting I can barely get a clear shot but the technical levels shoot through the roof, the blistering guitar work throughout their set is mind boggling to say the least, the two guitarists have raised platforms, not only to get better vantage points but to raise their legs are they plant themselves for the intricate solo work.

The musicianship is just on another level altogether, the two guitarists are on a mission as they blaze their way across a packed setlist of around 16 or 17 highly technical tracks, the bassist sharing vocal duties and rocking out ta fuck when he’s not on the mic, he’s defo living his best life up there. The drummer’s head keeps spinning like a windmill as he ages throughout, yet somehow managing to keep time as he does, the band completely backlit and mostly by strobes looks great from the floor, but for the majority of the set, the band is in complete darkness apart from in between songs when the odd house light catches them as they chat with the Belfast crowd.

The music of Born Of Osiris is a quandary, technically brilliant, violent and aggressive as fuck, but in equal part melodically beautiful at times. They swing from aggressive riffage to technically brilliant passages and huge sing-along choruses, you get everything and the kitchen sink at one of their gigs and the Belfast crowd is fully immersed and engrossed in their performance.

From start to finish, it was a technical masterclass, the band were on fire and as tight as you will see this year. A stellar performance from a band a long way from home. As with all bands, you have to admire a tour such as this, especially as they have travelled so far. Get your asses out and support it.

I do have to go back to an earlier point regarding lighting, though. Tonight I watched a headline band play for 90 minutes without a single light illuminating the band from the front. Complete darkness for 90 minutes. I am lost as to the thought process at play in modern metal and touring bands right now, as it seems to be genre-wide and so poor compared to other genres; something really needs to change, and the sooner the better.
