Bloodstock OpeN Air 2024 // The Sophie Lancaster Stage // Saturday August 10th // Pt.1

Cauldron opened on the Sophie Stage today. All elements were there. Active band members on stage. Some good harsh vocals. But the crowd didn’t seem to be very excited. Maybe the side effects of the first show of the day. No doubt this will still be an amazing opportunity for Cauldron who now have the clout to say they played on this stage. Quite a decent amount of people did turn up, most eating their breakfast as they slightly moshh their heads with a mouth full of food.

Unpeople are definitely a stand out for me. The band came on stage and didn’t waste any time on getting the crowd excited. The vocalist stood centre stage, staring down the crowd like he was ready to fight. This sparking a fire in the pit. The musicality of the band, the melodies, the vocals- all worked together to create a great atmosphere like that of watching a gig in a venue on a Friday evening. The drummer was a joy to watch, he’d be constantly going between a look of pure rate to smiles being thrown out to the pit below. The band won’t be the heavy music some fans here today will be after, but damn the mix of genres they concocted are working for me.

Enemies Everywhere hail from either Finland or the depths of hell- it’s easy to forget when you hear those growls. Damn. Those growls. I’d compare them to the likes of Will Ramos from Lorna Shore. As soon as that first song came in and the vocalist let out some of the lowest growls I’ve heard in a long time, I could see everyone in the crowd immediately lock on. All eyes on the stage. People were looking to each other with a face of “well shit”, as they acknowledged the harsh vocal range within just one song. The guitarists of the band constantly moshed that long luscious hair they have that I’m pretty sure all my photos of them just look like there was one hell of a wind storm. Nah, that’s just all them.

If Ghost had a child with David Bowie, specifically as the Goblin King from Labyrinth, Ludovico technique is what would be born. The band are introduced with a shout out to their hometown, New York. On come veiled members donning their instruments. I’m thinking, “oh cool, like a gothic masked band.” Imagine my shock when the heavy makeup, claw handed and voice reminiscent of early 2000s gothic vocalist came on stage. The crowd has grown immensely by this point. Have people just woken up or have they come specifically to see this singer do them bend backs and kneels on stage? We will never know. It’s such an interesting amalgamation of genres this band has and they’re so captivating to watch with each members never sparing a second in the same position.

Mimi Barks is an artists I always look forward to seeing. There’s something captivating about the way they portray trap metal. With the bass, you can’t help but feel yourself start to move along to the drops. The pit has doubled in size since last time. People have now set up chairs to catch Barks as they tear up the stage. The touring drummer doesn’t waste any of that energy given by the crowd either. At one point, he jumps from the stage to greet a child (I assume his). We had our first surfer of the day too, earning a finger point from the vocalist. Mimi doesn’t necessarily scream…she does a vocal fry that borders screaming and the grudge (and of course rap and sometimes soft vocals). A new addition, that I haven’t seen before, is someone manning the laptop. Adding a little bit more to the stage as they jump up and down and do some spins when the music is building up.
