Bloodstock Open Air 2024 // Ronnie James Dio Stage // Sunday 11th August // Part 1

It’s the final day of Bloodstock and there’s some epic bands on the bill for today. First to hit the stage however are Raised by Owls who have made the leap from the Sophie stage to the main stage this year. Despite being so early in the day Sam Strachan comes out all guns blazing and immediately instructs a circle pit be opened. The rather impressively large crowd who have gathered here so early are just as ready to go though as they throw themselves into the music. As the band do what they do best by performing extreme metal songs that are short, cover all genres and gently poke fun at the world, the screen behind them shows the most bizarre and interesting VT with everything from Ainsley Harriet to their music videos. Strachan continues to have fun with the crowd and it’s these live performances that make this band a must see. From start to finish there is an air of complete silliness that you can’t help but stay for waiting to see what they are going to do next. Will it be a terrible Danzig impersonation, or the singers own mum dressed as a nun joining them on stage or a wall of death that is split by the way you pronounce ‘scones’! However, you look at it, we’re awake as proven by the first waves of crowd surfers making their way over the barrier and the pits going on.

Up next we have Venezuelan Psychedelic-Sludge-Doom-Thrash Metallers Cultura Tres. After an interesting cultural intro track that drummer Jerry Vergara Cevallos plays along with the rest of the band come out and tear into their set. From fast and ferocious riffs to higher pitched wails, brothers Alejandro and Juanma Montoyas vision comes to life on stage. A crowd soon gathers to witness the technical prowess of the band on stage which is complemented by Alejandro’s deep vocals. The blend of metal subgenres is nothing like we’ve seen so far and as the set goes on, it gathers interest from a growing crowd.
Next, we see the mighty Soen for a bit of Power metal. Coming onto the stage to the sound of gunshots and war being played, these guys are more about the modern real-life epics than the more traditional fantasy. Their sound still encompasses the symphonic sound that is incredibly powerful when performed live. The tones of Joel Ekelöfs voice command your attention while his stage presence holds you there. The whole band is entertaining to watch though as they play to the crowd and encourage them to participate in the show. The set mixes huge anthems with softer more melodic sections which are both just as enchanting to watch and hear. This lighter sound is a nice break in the morning and is fitting with The Night Flight Orchestra playing later in the day. From the short bursts of pyro to the singalong anthems, it’s certainly been an entertaining performance. Having not heard much of these guys before today, they are now on my list of takeaway bands from the weekend.
