It’s day 2 at Bloodstock and the sun is already up and beating down on the grounds of the Arena. For those that are up early and ready to rock, BAEST are up first and are ready to open the main stage with some death metal.
Baest
BAEST come from Aarhus in Denmark and have successfully established themselves as one of the country’s most promising metal acts in recent years. While deeply rooted in straight-forward classic death metal inspired by genre legends like Dismember, Entombed, Morbid Angel, Death, and Bolt Thrower, the 2015 formed band evolved from a Danish underground phenomenon to an internationally touring act (2018 tour with Abbath, 2019 EU/UK trek with Decapitated). Also, at festivals like Summer Breeze, Copenhell, Ruhrpott Metal Meeting, Roskilde, they left audiences impressed and begging for more. After their already praised debut album “Danse Macabre” the band took it to the next level in 2019 and delivered “Venenum” where they refined their already steamroller-like signature sound. With the expectation-bar already set so high for their next record “Necro Sapiens” BAEST truly drops their most anticipated and most important album so far.
This morning, as the band took to the stage, there was already quite a crowd gathered around to watch them; however this grew throughout the set as they gathered the interest of more and more people. Within minutes, frontman Simon Olsen has the crowd chanting along and pumping their fists in the air while hair is flying back and forth from the guitarists. The band is incredibly energetic for the first thing in the morning and are great at waking the audience up as Olsen interacts with them throughout getting them moving and involved in the show. In fact, it’s not long before a circle pit opens up and the crowd really lets loose. The whole performance is on point from the band and they are a great way to start the day!

Lost Society
Keeping things going, up next are Lost Society who were founded by frontman Samy Elbanna in 2010 when the guys were still in their teens. Lost Society began rapidly claiming fame as a formidable live act in and around their hometown of Jyväskylä, Finland. Lost Society’s debut album, ‘Fast Loud Death’ (2013) was a full-on thrash tornado, filled with razor sharp songwriting and technical prowess that received widespread acclaim from both the global metal media and metal community as well as their peers and heroes in legendary bands like Kreator and Testament. The band have since released a further 2 albums and been touring throughout leaving a trail of full-blown chaos in their wake.
As frontman Samy Elbanna burst onto the stage, it was clear he was ready to go and keep the party going. From the moment he grabbed the mic to greet the crowd, he never stopped, as he leapt around the stage, banged his head and sent his hair spinning. With so much energy it’s no wonder he wanted the crowd to match it and kept encouraging them to join in. It wasn’t long before the crowd were jumping, clapping along and opening the pits back up. Elbanna makes an incredible frontman as he is captivating to watch and makes you want to join in with the show. Amongst all of that stage presence, both his and the rest of the bands technical playing was incredible to watch as they completely owned their instruments delivering an amazing live show. As the set comes to a close, Elbannahas one last incredible performance to give. As he gets the crowd crouching down before the track starts, he soon has them jumping up before he heads down to the barrier to rock out up close with the crowd. Before long he’s up and over the crowd surfing across them, all the while continuing to give an incredible performance. I’ve never seen these guys live before and this morning they have completely blown me away and I’ll be definitely keeping my eyes open for any future tours!

Spiritworld
As the afternoon sets in and the sun heads towards its highest peak, the main stage keeps on giving as crowds gather to catch Spirit World. Imagine the American frontier: where burning skies meet sandblasted mesas. Where lost highways stretch into darkness and undisturbed deserts speak a language as ominous as it is otherworldly. This is the tableau of Spirit World. Their debut album, ‘Pagan Rhythms’ is the soundtrack to this Death Western style as they have staked their claim like firebrands and outlaws coming off the deadlands to shoot, ride and speak their truth. Conceived entirely by vocalist Stu Folsom, whose songs like “Comancheria” or “Ritual Human Sacrifice” brim with an undercurrent of Western and Native American themes. Imagine a south of heaven event horizon where Hatebreed meets Cormac McCarthy.
Hitting the stage, half of the band are dressed in full western gear, Cowboy hats included, while the others have some incredibly detailed and rhinestoned suit jackets on leaving you guessing as to what these guys are about. As they begin to play sounding like a full metalcore band, Spirit World certainly grabs your attention. As they play through their set it’s clear that they are determined to put on one hell of a performance though as smoke settles across the stage and the technical driving riffs pull you in before the shredding solos keep your attention asking what more do these guys have to offer. The answer is headbanging hits that the crowd have swiftly handed themselves over to. Frontman Stu Folsom works the crowd encouraging them to let loose, which they do as they enjoy watching the band perform. As debuts at Bloodstock go, these guys have certainly killed it!
