Songwriter Anthony Toner marks a new chapter this year with the publication of Distance & Love, a selection of his lyrics from the last quarter of a century of writing and performance.
The hardback collection, printed with the assistance of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, was launched at the Aspects Literary Festival in Bangor at the start of October, and is now on sale from Anthony’s website – and at his shows from now until the end of the year.
Revered and respected as one Northern Ireland’s most prolific and acclaimed musical artists, Anthony has been writing and recording songs packed with arresting images and elegant, insightful language since his recording debut in 2001. Throughout a career a quarter of a decade long, audiences and fans have been commenting on the strength of his lyrics, with one observer describing a live performance as ‘like watching a series of beautiful short films’.
This collection brings together the best of Anthony’s song lyrics from the last quarter of a century and includes the words of some of his most-requested songs, like ‘Sailortown’, ‘The Road to Fivemiletown’, ‘An Alphabet’, ‘Well Well Well’ and many more. The collection also contains an introduction from Anthony, some photographs and a couple of specific introductions for perhaps his two best-known songs, ‘Sailortown’ and ‘The Road to Fivemiletown’.
Anthony performs across Northern Ireland throughout October, November and December in a variety of line-ups – including several solo acoustic shows, performances with friends and collaborators, and including five dates in Scotland in late October as special guest of folk legend Barbara Dickson.
