LA born and bred, Ando San has spent his career to date experimenting from release to release, pushing and pulling differening and dynamic aspects of his myriad influences, his output from instrumental math rock to jazzy hip-hop, with this year’s ‘OH KAY’ E.P finding him in harder-edged, boom-bap funk fusion territory.
On Thick Neck, Ando San has pushed that harder edge further, pushing some main character energy onto his first instrument – the guitar.
“I wanted to channel my metal origins and blend a 2000’s hip hop vibe to the track,” says Ando San; “The guitar tone is very much inspired by classic death metal like Cannibal Corpse, and what kicked this song off was very much the riff. I’ve typically always done the beat first, but lately with the songs I’ve beewriting the guitar has become the focal point of my process.”
“Thick Neck is about how I have tough skin,” he continues, discussing the track’s infectious air of attitude and swagger; “I have been doing music full-time for 7 years, and have had a lot of people in my ear telling me how I should act, what I should say, and how I should feel. It’s very important for me to be myself and follow my intuition with everything I do with my art. I very much tapped into myself for inspiration; as weird as that is to say, I feel like I’ve been having a lot of interesting ideas in my head that I’ve never really heard anywhere else. I’m still trying to figure out what that is, and I think that’s very exciting.”
