What can be said about Nicke Andersson that we don‘t already know? His back catalogue speaks volumes and reads like a Greatest Hits / Historia De La Musica Rock series.
Yet he still has more up his sleeve. Nearly 40 years in and Nicke releases his first true solo album, Nicke Andersson and Nobody Else. The title says it all, for the first time, he‘s done everything. On this album Nicke can be found playing every instrument himself and producing the album single-handedly.
Maybe we should offer a refresher, he has had a storied career, after all. As one of Sweden’s most versatile and distinctive musicians, Nicke has been carving his own path since the late 80s, leaving a lasting mark on both the Swedish and international music scenes.
His (Left hand?) path at the beginning was with Nihilist in 1987, who split to form Entombed, co-founded by Nicke and realistically, an almost genre-defining band in the history of Death Metal Worldwide. In 1994, alongside his drumming duties in Entombed, he co-founded The Hellacopters, as joint lead guitarist/vocalist. In 1998 he left Entombed to focus solely on The Hellacopters, who went on to become a pivotal force in Swedish rock‘n‘roll, introducing Nicke‘s high energy songwriting to an entirely new audience around the world!
He could not rest on any laurels he may have achieved from all that, however, because he then proceeded to involve himself in a wide range of projects and collaborations with peers, and friends. Including The Hydromatics, The Solution, Death Breath, Imperial State Electric, and Lucifer. There was as well, his extensive production work for many artists.
This is one talented, busy fellow, he‘s never shied away from the prevailing constant, an almost irrepressible desire to create music on his own terms, regardless of genre or whatever‘s trendy right now.
With Nicke Andersson and Nobody Else, that ingrained philosophy is taken to its ultimate conclusion.
There is no band to hide behind here. Nicke Andersson is responsible for every aspect of the record, from instrumentation and arrangements to production. The result is an album that throbs with creativity, experience, and a profound love for rock music’s past, present, and future. Artwork, we haven‘t mentioned artwork…yes, he‘s in charge of that too.
He writes and sings like someone who no longer has anything to prove yet still has everything to say. These songs never pretend to be something they are not. They speak plainly, with intelligence and self-awareness, about ambition, exhaustion, love, and identity in a world that never slows down for anyone. Some surprises to be found here, you do get an idea of where he‘s coming from, and indeed, where he‘s going.
The result is an album that places one of Sweden’s most singular rock musicians firmly and completely in the spotlight for the very first time.
Nicke Andersson. And nobody else.
