Sunjay Announces New Album “Split The Sheets”

Sunjay Announces New Album “Split The Sheets” and Releases First single – A Bold Reimagining of Jimmy Reed’s “Take Out Some Insurance”

Award-winning British blues & roots artist Sunjay has announced the release of his tenth studio album, Split The Sheets, alongside the release of its powerful first single, “Take Out Some Insurance”, a bold reimagining of the classic track by Jimmy Reed.

A track that sets the tone for the album, rooted in the blues, but built to sound powerful, modern and alive.
Speaking about the new album, Sunjay says:
“Split The Sheets is a very significant record for me. It’s my tenth album and the final covers record I’ll be making. It closes a long chapter of interpretation and learning, and it allowed me to take everything I’ve absorbed over the years and use it without restraint. I didn’t want a polite record, I wanted something with weight, groove and emotional honesty. This album feels like a statement and a turning point.”

On the lead single, he explains:
“‘Take Out Some Insurance’ felt like the right place to start the build up to my new record because it allowed me to be bold. Jimmy Reed’s original has a looseness and swing that’s timeless, but I didn’t want to recreate it or soften it. My version leans into weight, groove and tension, it’s fuller, heavier, and deliberately more physical. It sets the tone for the album as a whole: respectful of the source, but unafraid to push the song into a contemporary emotional and sonic space.”

Critics have long recognised Sunjay as one of the UK’s standouts. Iain Anderson, BBC Radio Scotland, said of Sunjay “One of the UK’s finest young Blues stars.”
“A very accomplished and dynamic guitarist, with a mature stage presence and echoes of a young Ralph McTell.” said RNR Magazine.
Described by Mike Harding, BBC Radio 2, as “One of the best young pickers and singers around.”

Sunjay has previously been a BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards nominee and Winner of the Wath Festival Young Performers Award, as well as twice nominated at the British Blues Awards.

Sunjay is the antithesis of your typical denim clad dishevelled folk and blues musician. From his perfectly groomed hair to his spotlessly shining winkle picker boots he walks onto the stage every inch the “city slicker.” When Sunjay starts to sing and play the guitar however, you are transported to a world where blues and country music meld seamlessly. Sunjay is, without doubt, the real deal.
