SONIC ABUSE

Coinciding with 35 years since Novembre’s original inception under the Catacomb moniker, the newly reinvigorated Italian pioneers of atmospheric doom/death metal return with their most elaborately adorned and sonically refined opus to date – Words of Indigoout today on Peaceville.

An exquisite and finely-textured display of creative prowess exploring themes of danger and innocence, fear and nostalgia, this latest journey takes us through the torrents of raging death metal and sweeping, uplifting passages of serene poignancy, all woven together as finely crafted and layered melodic epics.

Alongside the album release today, the band have also shared a new video for the track ‘Neptunian Hearts’, produced by Kinorama Studio. Speaking about the new video, songwriter and lead vocalist Carmelo Orlando shared –

This is a very diverse track that blends many of our influences from early ’90s avant-garde death metal. There’s a use of left and right harmonies very typical of what was played around ’94-’95. The layered fast-picked riffs are also strongly anchored in the European scene of that period. It’s a song that breathes and has moments of melodic openness, with a very catchy chorus. I believe mixing it wasn’t an easy task for Dan Swanö, but as usual, he managed to make it clear and defined in every part.

Its lyrics speak of the innocence and solitude of electric-blue souls — figuratively, like the planet Neptune. Little flames that know no malice and live in a stray way, in packs, for companionship, out of fear of the dark hours.

For this video, we completely relied on the experience of Greta and her Kinorama Studio’s team. It was a fun yet highly professional journey. We truly appreciated how they managed to blend old analog techniques with modern digital artistry. The outdoor scenes are pure cinematic art — the best Italian landscapes and the outstanding performances of these young, talented actors turned this video into a real little treasure.

Mixing and mastering work was carried out by legendary producer extraordinaire, Dan Swanö (Opeth, Katatonia, Bloodbath) at Unisound Studios. Artwork for ‘Words of Indigo’ was created by renowned artist Travis Smith (Opeth, Katatonia).

Novembre’s origins date back to September 1990 in Rome, Italy, whereby brothers Carmelo and Giuseppe Orlando created their formative recordings under the name of Catacomb. These songs demonstrated a gothic & doom metal-oriented style, leading to interest among the underground. It was around 1993 that the brothers decided that a name change was in order, and Novembre was born, evolving into one of the premier European atmospheric doom bands over the years, with their debut, ‘Wish I Could Dream it Again…’ in 1994, helping to launch Novembre onto the international stage.
