Emo & power pop collide as Burp. drop new track “ELW”

East Coast outfit Burp. have dropped new single, “ELW”. The track nods to 60’s pop as well as more contemporary power pop, whilst bringing the band’s own punk-laced directness and contemporary emo intonations to the fore.

The quartet have also announced their upcoming EP, Video Games & Cartoons, set for release August 22nd, 2025.

Speaking on the new track, the band’s Nathan Richer shares: “This is our attempt at writing a pop-rock song. Leo (Folan, guitars) still tried to sneak some fancy stuff in there, but also kept it as diatonic as possible. Lyrically, it is a love letter to all of the people who have talked about us behind our backs.”

Burp. started like many bands do. A group of friends making noise in basements, unsure of where, if anywhere, it would lead. But their innate chemistry quickly became evident – both to themselves and their loyal local fanbase, with the release of 2023 debut album, Burp.

Earning acclaim across the greater Boston area, Burp. struck a chord with a soundscape that took from the 90s pop-punk scene, with splashes of the 10s emo revival.

September 2024 saw the release of follow up Acid Reflux, doubling down on the group’s hybrid of raw energy and refined, deliberate storytelling. Tracks like “Cigarettes” and “Sorry About Joe” hit with their personal insight on growing up; nodding to the past, while looking to the future. The collection imbued hooky guitars with introspective lyricism, each song an honest and relatable insight into the band’s growth, both sonically and personally.

Burp. cites influence from the likes of Microwave and Joyce Manor on the new material, as they build towards upcoming EP, Video Games & Cartoons. Following on from the release of pacey punk gem “Ricky Mortis” and grunge-fuelled “Checkers”, “ELW” brings a subtle sonic shift for the band with a cultured take on pop rock, that nods as much to The Beatles as it does Macseal.

“ELW” is out now.
