That is where “Shivers” begins. The track opens quietly and tensely, holding your breath, then bursts into jagged riffs like an electric shock. Lead singer Skye explains, “‘Shivers’ captures that gut feeling you get when something feels wrong even if you can’t explain why. It’s a physical reaction beyond your control, no matter how much you try.” | | |

Thematically, NEON VOID is Sumo Cyco’s most ambitious and deliberate work yet. Written during a period of deeply personal and global unrest, the album explores the maze of modern life where screens mediate our relationships, time feels weaponized, and survival is often about pushing through the noise to find your center. Tracks move between high-energy chaos and quiet resilience, reflecting the extremes of the human experience in a fractured world. | | The 12 tracks aren’t just an album; they’re a fierce explosion of raw emotion, fire, and defiant hope forged in the crucible of struggle. From the first thunderous chord to the last lingering echo, this record seethes with a visceral intensity that grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go. Every riff is sharpened to a blade’s edge, every vocal line led by Skye drips with unfiltered feeling, and every beat pulses like a heartbeat racing toward the edge. | | “The neon void is temptation and escape. It’s both maze and mirror,” says Skye. “This record was written when I felt trapped in darkness and needed to build my way back toward something vibrant and alive.” | | Skye, who began her career as a teen pop star and later co-founded Sumo Cyco with guitarist and producer Matt Drake, wrote much of NEON VOID on the upright piano gifted to her during the pandemic. That reconnection with her roots helped shape the album’s duality: polished but raw, heavy but healing, grounded but cinematic. | | The creative process marked a bold shift for the band, with Drake laying down the initial tracks and sculpting a sound that pulses with progressive metal energy, electric chaos, and a slick, almost celebratory glaze. Each guitar tone was meticulously crafted to crackle with abrasive power yet shimmer with unexpected sheen, melding crushing low ends and searing highs that push the listener into sonic overdrive. Produced by Salvatore Sam Guiana (Silverstein, Neck Deep, The Devil Wears Prada) alongside Drake, and recorded in the band’s converted church studio in Ontario, NEON VOID is a genre-bending statement combining punk grit, metal fury, and pop sensibility with fearless creative vision. | | “We’ve always bent genres, but this time, it wasn’t just about experimenting, it was about refining,” adds Skye. “We’ve never put more time into a record than this one. |
