“A timeless record that showcases Martin’s ability to create intimacy. 4/5″ – DIY

Today (21st February 2025) Martin Luke Brown releases his introspective and exploratory second album ‘man oh man !’ via AMK, distributed by Kartel Music Group. Marking a significant new era in both his personal and musical life, the record houses a myriad of themes; modern masculinity, self-awareness and personal growth, treasured friendships, swept-off-your-feet romance, gut wrenching heartbreak, with an overarching message to find peace in the simple things amongst the complexities of modern life. Listen to ‘man oh man !’ here.

Described by Martin as a “time capsule”, each track on the album was written and recorded in one day, making for a raw and honest snapshot of his life experiences at the time. Instrumentation is simple and recorded with producer and friend Matt Zara using almost exclusively analog technology – tape machines and vintage mics, a messiness that the duo embraced from the get go.

Martin has released excerpts from the album in singles ‘to be a man’, ‘animal’, ‘this is me now’ and ‘hello !’, all marking a sonic welcome to Martin’s new chapter following a whirlwind year as part of surreal indie supergroup FIZZ. So far, his new music has seen a wealth of support from BBC Radio 1, DIY, Dork, Dummy, Far Out and more.

To mark the album’s release today, Martin shares focus track ‘back 2 ya’, an outpouring of love for friends and loved ones who are a consistent grounding and guiding force. He speaks on the track “This song is for Dodes, Orla and Gret. The FIZZ. It was a bonkers turbulent time; high highs, low lows. I wanted to acknowledge the significance of it for all of us, and to embrace this new chapter. It’s really a celebration of returning to being just friends as opposed to friends, colleagues, therapists and everything else we became during that time”.

Today, Martin also kicks off a series of live in-stores, celebrating the release of ‘man oh man !’ and performing both old and new tracks. Tickets are on sale now here, and dates are:

21 Feb – Rough Trade Denmark St, London **SOLD OUT**

22 Feb – Jumbo, Leeds

23 Feb – Big Difference, Leicester

25 Feb – Banquet, Kingston **SOLD OUT**

It’s clear on ‘man oh man !’ that Martin is embracing the dynamics of life with a glass half full approach, culminating in a warming, vintage-tinged sound that nods to past greats yet makes for a refreshing and comforting listen in modern times.

A self taught multi instrumentalist since the age of 12, Martin Luke Brown grew up in Leicester, a cultural melting pot, which defined his formative years, before moving to London for University aged 19. Before the move, Martin weaved his way into East Midlands’ rich music scene and attracted support from BBC Introducing alongside artist friends such as Mahalia, Easylife, and Saint Raymond. Once relocated in the capital, two years of gigging and writing led to him dropping out of University early after his debut single ‘Nostalgia’ landed him a major label record deal with Parlophone.

Martin comments, “Looking back, I wasn’t ready for it. I’ve always believed in my ability as a musician – I know I’m capable, but becoming an artist and really owning what I AM has taken me a long time to get to grips with. I was so uncomfortable and out of my depth and that led to a lot of mental health struggles”.

In 2017, Martin decided to take an indefinite break from his artist project. He’d already begun working on other projects, and naturally transitioned into more of a collaborator – guiding other artists and helping them find their voice. In the five years since, Martin has had over 100 released songs as either a co-writer or a producer, including songs with Lizzy McAlpine, BTS, YUNGBLUD, DYLAN, Jacob Banks, Gavin James, Sam Tompkins, James Blunt, James Smith, Orla Gartland, Victoria Canal, Eloise, and Nectar Woode.

As the world came to a standstill in early 2020, the daily rhythm of sessions; writing, recording and working with other artists stopped too. It was during this time Martin refined his own artistry, leading to this new project – one that marks a significant new era in both his musical career and life. Awash with a palpable feeling of nostalgia and bittersweet reflection, Martin deals unapologetically with themes of love, loss and belonging; his potent lyricism delivered with a characterful, unfussy vocal and a sound that is defined by both the intrinsic sense of fun he injects into the writing process and genuine sentimentality.

This culminated in the release of 2023’s debut album ‘damn, look at the view’, which gathered support from BBC Radio 1, Wonderland, Spindle & more. More recently, Martin Luke Brown has seen a wealth of success as part of FIZZ alongside Orla Gartland, dodie, and Greta Isaac, earning widespread praise from the likes of Rolling Stone UK, Dork, DIY, Clash & more.

Martin Luke Brown’s new single ‘back 2 ya’ is out now – Stream it here. Taken from the new album ‘man oh man !’, out now on AMK, distributed via Kartel Music Group. Listen to it here.
