Naarm/Melbourne-based artist Hannah McKittrick (she/her) returns with her new single and video ‘Utensil’, an alt-rock song at its most anthemic and meditative that serves as a reminder to stay alert to beauty and mystery, without trying to control either. It’s Hannah’s first single since her expansive album The day has again bruised me (2022), and is released before she heads to the UK & Europe to support Angie McMahon. Stream/watch HERE ‘Utensil’ was first written when Hannah McKittrick found herself hungrily searching for clues on how to live. She found symbols in the air, in the perusal of health, in connections with people and animals and the whole-hearted surrender to mystery. Hannah McKittrick shares, “Utensil’ is about letting things flicker in and out of your focus. It is about loving animals, noticing the wind on the surface of the Yarra and honouring the ceremony of it. To come home at midnight, still carrying the exuberance of the outside world with you but trying not to wake everyone up as you come in. To identify the colour you love and then every time it enters your vision you are given a gift. To throw things up in the air to see how they feel when you catch them. To touch and always honour its predecessor; reaching.” Where The day has again bruised me was a deeply intimate portal to the searing heat of loss and expansive waves of love, on ‘Utensil’ Hannah McKittrick zooms out, creating a roomier, more euphoric sonic palette that leaves space for interpretation. Alongside Hannah, it features instrumentation by Theo Carbo, Ollie Cox and Imogen Cygler, with engineering by Alex O’Gorman, mastering by Lachlan Carrick with recording taking place between the Treehouse on Bunurong/Boonwurrung Country, and at Theo Carbo’s studio, who also produced and mixed the song, on Wurundjeri Country. The ‘Utensil’ music video, directed and filmed on a handycam by her drummer and close friend Ollie Cox, captures spirited gestures, textures and abstractions and presents them plainly and playfully, without the strain of a narrative. It was shot in the Nicholas Building and the Abbotsford Convent; “we wanted the feeling of Melbourne to be palpable and unavoidable, but blurred slightly to allow room for our favourite forces; mystery, surrealism and fun,” Hannah McKittrick shares. “I love living in this city because it feels like people are close to me, and other people make me feel like I belong.” Director Ollie Cox adds, “This video is testament to the trust that Han and I have for each other – something I value more than anything. We went in with no expectations or concrete plans, leaning into what excited us in the moment, and what looked good on that tiny handycam screen. The process was very simple and playful, which for me honours what the song is about.” A widely revered musician, composer and lyricist, Hannah McKittrick is a Bunurong/South Gippsland-born Naarm/Melbourne-based musician whose songs flicker between the hyper-specific and the universal, delivered with a graceful solemnity. Equipped with a voice that instantly hushes a room, she honours atmosphere, intimacy and truth. In 2022 Hannah McKittrick released her album The day has again bruised me which led her to share stages with Angie McMahon, Julia Jacklin, Stella Donnelly and Maple Glider. To see Hannah perform live is a ceremonial experience; she anchors audiences through a deep trust in an artist who is in possession of her own power. Hannah also hosts cult Sunday night community radio program Soak on PBS FM Australia, has contributed to compositions to La Mama Theatre and Melbourne Music Week and is a member of alt-country band Quality Used Cars.
