OVERCOATS (JJ Mitchell and Hana Elion) have released their captivating new album, Winner, out today via their imprint, Never Fall Back Records, distributed by Thirty Tigers. Listen HERE. The duo, who have received plays from Radio 1 and have been praised from the likes of NPR Music, The New York Times, FADER, , Paste, HUNGER, The Line of Best Fit and more, now release Winner , a warm and luminous collection of songs showcasing their masterful songwriting and trademark harmonies that effectively straddle the worlds of pop, country and electronic. Winner was produced by two-time GRAMMY-winner Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves’s acclaimed Golden Hour), and features additional production from Jackson Phillips (Day Wave, Hazel English, Hana Vu) and Nick Lobel (Harry Styles, LANY), with songs co-written with Trent Dabbs (Lucius, Ingrid Michaelson), Kate York (Lennon Stella, Fall Out Boy) and Mike Malchicoff (King Princess, Niall Horan, Bo Burnham). Highlights on the new album include “Never Let You Go,” which influential station KCRW selected as one of their Top Tunes , the stunning title track “Winner,” and the playful “New Suede Shoes” which is garnering airplay in the UK across BBC Radio One. The new music has been landing on prominent Spotify playlists including Dinner with Friends, All New Indie and young & free, as well notable outlets including Consequence and Ones To Watch. OVERCOATS made their welcome return to SXSW, with shout outs from The Austin Chronicle and multiple showcases, including a live session for Paste. They’ll embark on their long-awaited 16-date U.S. tour kicking off April 24th with stops in New York City (Bowery Ballroom April 26th), Los Angeles (Lodge Room May 19), Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco and more. Winner was informed by a series of losses and upheavals in Elion and Mitchell’s lives: breakups, a split with their former label (and the decision to strike out on their own), and the confusion and uncertainty of a never-ending pandemic. “Rejection was a big inspiration for us on this album,” says Mitchell. “Because when you fall off the horse, you can either admit defeat or declare yourself a winner and get back up again.” Even in its most irascible moments, Winner radiates an exuberance that has much to do with the effusive chemistry of Elion and Mitchell’s friendship and kindred artistic spirits. Partly inspired by a visit to Georgia O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, the duo’s fascination with a more unfettered way of life soon catalyzed a newfound freedom in their musical identity. “Making this album opened us up to a new path where we were combining pop with our roots in folk and singer/songwriter music, which we’d never really let the world see before,” says Elion. “We’re at the point in our lives and careers where we know that we’re going to create the best product if we’re completely authentic to ourselves, and we really lived that on this record.” OVERCOATS first started singing together in their Wesleyan dorm room back in 2015. Having made a lasting impression with their 2017 debut and 2020 sophomore albums respectively, the acclaimed pair earned a Breakthrough Artist nomination from the American Association of Independent Music, with touring resume that includes opening slots for Mitski, Maggie Rogers and Cold War Kids among others. |
