Following his triumphant performance at Cambridge Folk Festival at the end of July, where he won legions of new fans, rising Americana star William Prince has announced UK and Ireland dates for November. The much-anticipated shows, part of a 14-date European tour, are as follows:
Prince’s Cambridge Folk Festival 2023set drew praise from fans and media alike, with The Cambridge Independent newspaper writing: “…an amazing Folk Festival debut from this talented singer-songwriter.” At The Barrier commented: “I hadn’t heard him or of him before; I now have most his albums.” And Entertainment Now in its review of the Festival said: “Canadian First Nation singer/guitarist William Prince killed softly with his simple love songs.”
Earlier this year, Prince released his new album Stand in the Joy. Produced by GRAMMY-winner Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile) at his studio in Savannah, Georgia, the album finds Prince’s storytelling gifts in full bloom. In these 10 songs, Prince works to embrace life’s small beauties, unburdened by past mistakes and circumstances. It’s an open-hearted work that’s evidence of the prolific songwriter coming into his own.
Stand in the Joy is a graceful work shaped by Prince and Cobb, lead guitarist and frequent Prince player Mike T. Kerr, and a roomful of talented musicians including Chris Powell (drums), Brian Allen (base), Paul Franklin (pedal steel), Lee Pardini (keyboard), and the exquisite backing vocals of fiancée and album inspiration Alyshia Grace. Stand in the Joy was mixed and recorded by Brandon Bell and mastered by Peter Lyman.
As the music of Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson mines the experiences of folks in Kentucky coal towns, William Prince’s songs are influenced by his upbringing on a Peguis First Nation reservation in Canada. Either through his generous empathy, his expressive baritone, or years of therapy, every drop of joy on his latest album Stand in the Joyseems acutely earned.
Says William: “This record acknowledges pain but does not give it power. What I hope comes through are feelings of love, peace, and strength. The strength to stand in the goodness of what you have, rather than sit in what you have lost.”
In his home country of Canada, Prince is a star: He has sold-out a national theatre tour, opened for Neil Young, and collaborated with Buffy Sainte-Marie. Internationally, Prince’s profile continues to grow. In January 2023, he performed a prestigious showcase and took part in a sublime Songwriter’s Circle at UK Americana Music Week in London which garnered widespread acclaim. Of the showcase set, one reviewer stated: “My top pick from the night was William Prince. A large stage presence both physically and personality wise, Prince held his audience captive from the word go.” The Songwriters Circle featured in Holler’s Top 10 Moments of the Festival. In February, he made his Grand Ole Opry debut in Nashville and he has been nominated for Emerging Act of the Year by the Americana Honours & Awards 2023.
William Prince’s music has resonated with so many, appearing everywhere from NPR’s Tiny Desk to the hit television series Yellowstone, and a listen to any of his records quickly reveals why. Prince’s debut Earthy Days won a JUNO Award, and he followed that up with a pair of albums in 2020. The first of those, Reliever, “captures what makes William Prince such a beautiful presence” (NPR Music) and earned him his US television debut performance on CBS Saturday Morning. Prince followed that up with Gospel First Nation, which Rolling Stone called “fantastic” and was named as one of NPR Music’s favourite releases of 2020. On the back of these two 2020 releases, Prince amassed 11 awards, including Folk Alliance International Artist Of The Year for 2021 and a Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Album Of The Year for Reliever.
“An exceptionally well-crafted outing from William Prince, the masterful production being the cherry on top of an already delicious cake.” Americana-UK, 9/10
