Danish rockers Volbeat are back with possibly their biggest offering to date. Packed to the gills with instant classics laid down over their own classic sound which, if possible, seems to have gotten bigger. “Last Day Under The Sun” gets things started with a funky riff that runs throughout and lays the foundations for what is a brilliant song with some tasty solos thrown in for good measure and a nice little drum beat running in the background. “Pelvis On Fire” has a real AC/DC chugging riff to open up but then flies into a real Rockabilly rock-n-roller that will defy anyone not to nod the head or tap the foot to its infectious beat. “Rewind The Exit” changes tack a bit and is more of a radio-friendly pop-rock track but don’t let that put you off as it is a really catchy song with a funky little ZZ Top style intro riff, great melodies and some serious shredding.

“Die To Live” comes at you at a hundred miles an hour with chugging riffs and Clutch’s Neil Fallon lending his considerable vocals to the track. The piano trading off with the sax initially and then with the guitar and sax midway through is a strange but nice twist that gives the song that extra kick. “When We Were Kids” ever so gently lulls you into a nice easy number with softly sung lyrics for all of about a minute where it picks up the pace with an excellent chorus accompanied with a nice drum beat and tasty riff. The guitars become more prevalent midway through with a beast of a solo and those riffs just driving the song along. “Sorry Sack Of Bones” feels like a filler and is possibly the weakest track on the album, it has a kind of ethereal vibe but it doesn’t really work, it feels out of place. “Cloud 9” has a really groovy beat to it that gets you from the start and with its entrancing drum beat, you will be shaking your head to it and digging the duelling vocals which is brilliant. “Cheapside Sloggers” has a heavier feel to it and that may well be due to the fact that Exodus and Slayer guitarist Gary Holt is ripping here and rip he does with his trademark style, that aside the track is outstanding regardless going between heavy and just pure rock. “Parasite” has a real punk feel which is great but unfortunately only lasts about half a minute, as it would have been good to see where they went with it. “Leviathan” was the first single released of the album and it is a real arena rocker that will have you banging your head and stomping your feet to its madlyinfectious funky groove, packed full of killer riffs and pulsing drum and bass beat, what more could you ask for.

“The Awakening Of Bonnie Parker” is another Volbeat classic with their trademark sound coming through loud and clear, and I know it may be overstated here but it is just hard to escape how captivating and infectious they make practically every song. The penultimate song “The Everlasting” opens with a serious Metallica feel to it with its fat bass and guitar riffs and blasts along at breakneck speed until it breaks for really cool harmonious chorus before it flies back to light speed, with a couple of solos thrown in for good measure it has to be one of if not the best track on the whole album. “7-24” closes out the album with a nice acoustic number, a little different to previous tracks but not out of place at all.

This is an absolute gem of an album with something on here for everyone and is available everywhere on August 2nd via Vertigo Records.
