When it comes to crafting music that’s both unforgettable and affecting, no other alt-pop band does it better than The Driver Era and they more than prove this on their latest release their catchy new track”#1 Fan,” a song about going to great lengths to prove they really are their lover’s #1 fan. With their signature croon, the band sings “Just want a chance to try loving you/tell me the ways that I can/say those things that I never do/I’ll be your #1 fan/your #1 fan,” giving a bit of a nod to the ones who hold their affection and their upcoming sophomore album, Girlfriend, announced today.
When asked about the inspiration behind the track, Ross states “The song has two meanings – when we first started writing this song, my girlfriend (Jaz Sinclair) was also releasing music, and I loved that we aren’t one of those couples that feel like it’s a competition when there are two creatives involved. It’s also really about being your own #1 Fan, which Rocky and I absolutely are.”
Finally breaking out of their garage studio, the video for “#1 Fan” features the band with their friends and girlfriends — actresses Jaz Sinclair and AlexAnn Hopkins — on a rare day off letting loose. Shot with a mix of high-definition footage and gritty, old-school camcorder clips, viewers get a glimpse into what exactly the band does when they are having some down time, whether that’s hitting the water, riding jet-skis, dancing with one another, or just generally having a good time being in one another’s presence.
“#1 Fan” follows “Heaven Angel,” the most recent release from The Driver Era’s sophomore album. “Heaven Angel” is a punchy & dynamic track highlight’s the band’s signature ability to blend unforgettable melodies with intricate lyrics that makes this single in particular the perfect insight into The Driver Era’s new era. The track received love from the likes of DIY who called the track “funky disco-tinged,” The Aquarian described the song as “Subtle, Sultry, & Swoon-worthy,” and Paper Magazine said the band leans “into the over-the-top charm of their lyrics” and the track carries “theatrical vocals, playful electro production.”
“#1 Fan” and “Heaven Angel” follows the extensive work The Driver Era created & released throughout 2020 after their world tour was postponed due to the pandemic. In 2020 alone, the band released “Fade,” “Places,” “Take Me Away,” and the double release “OMG Plz Don’t Come Around” and “flashdrive“.
The Driver Era will embark on their world tour on November 15th, starting in the United States and traveling to the United Kingdom, Europe and South America in 2022. For tickets and VIP packages, please visit www.thedriverera.com.
About The Driver Era:
For The Driver Era, music can’t – and shouldn’t – be forced. The band, formed by brothers Ross and Rocky Lynch in 2018 while on tour with their former group R5, aims to embrace the present moment, creating songs that reflect each experience and feeling as it comes. It’s a philosophy that pervades all of the duo’s releases, from their debut single “Preacher Man” to their 2019 album X to their latest effort, Girlfriend.
The new album, written and produced by Ross and Rocky in their home studio, encapsulates the past few years of their lives, including songs that date back to 2016 alongside songs written in 2021. The tracks showcase a variety of influences, like INXS, Bruce Springsteen and Prince, and the album features a diverse array of styles, notably pulling on the musicians’ love of hip-hop producers like Pharrell and will.i.am. It’s an album connected by its creators, rather than an overall theme, and it contains only a handful of the massive amount of songs the pair has written recently.
The Driver Era’s fanbase has grown since their inception, encompassing both longtime fans of R5 and new listeners. The band has accumulated 115 million streams, with over 20 million global followers on social media. The Driver Era was featured on People Magazine’s “Emerging Artists” list and the duo has sold out shows all over the world, from Asia to the U.S. to Europe and South America. In R5, toured extensively and spent hours in the studio, skills they’re now able to apply to The Driver Era. Ross is also an acclaimed actor and notably starred in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and biopic film My Friend Dahmer, after spending five years playing Austin Moon on the popular Disney Channel Original Series, Austin & Ally. Girlfriend brings all these years of work together and reveals a band ready to step out into their next chapter.
