The sublime Magpie Salute return with High Water II, the follow up to 2018’s High Water I and in a similar fashion the guys have knocked out and truly beautiful recording. Right from the off you are fully immersed in the quality and history that these musicians bring to the fore, and unlike so many bands which try to emulate in one form or another this fluid and almost effortless style of songwriting, no-one quite does it as these guys can.
‘High Water II’ picks up where the band’s studio debut left off, much of the album was written during those early recordings at Dark Horse Studios in Nashville which is why the album feels like a perfect continuation of its predecessor. Talking about the flow between the two albums Robinson explains; Both records are part of a collective journey. I chose the sequence specifically for each record. I wanted ‘High Water l’ to introduce us to the world and the world to us. With ‘High Water ll,’ I wanted to get a little deeper. To take people places they may not have expected to go.”
The albums opening track ‘Sooner Or Later’ just envelopes you in its bluesy goodness, raw and visceral style which just speaks volumes of the quality within the band and what’s to come across these twelve delicious tracks. ‘Gimme Something’ lifts the pace and grabs you by the balls with it’s catchy and energetic tempo, if this doesn’t make you wanna get up and shake your ass you must be dead inside! ‘Leave It All Behind’ carries on with the energy stakes, hitting hard with the fierce energy and passionate delivery taking the listener on an audible rollercoaster with peaks and valleys throughout the track and album as a whole. The album itself is a continuation of where High Water I left off and seamlessly sees the musical band of brothers continues their journey together delving deeper into their understanding as a whole, peeling back layers and unveiling intricate beautifully composed tracks that you can simply lose yourself in.
Effortlessly sounding, yet complex and multilayered, the album is a packed with musical exploration which is only the beginning for The Magpie Salute and an indication of what is yet to come, in a world overloaded with cookie-cutter bands that flood our airwaves and tv screens, High Water II represents a breath of fresh air and an indication that there is still light at the end of the tunnel.
