Doors opened at seven-thirty, with a steady stream of people coming through on this damp Sunday evening in Southampton. The venue for tonight’s show is The 1865 in Brunswick Square and is one of my favourite venues as the lighting and sound are always good and I can normally park right outside of the venue. There is a main floor and bar area which holds around 600 and an upstairs balcony on one side that can hold another couple of hundred if required. It is run by a real music lover who formally ran the Talking Heads venues in the city until they closed and The 1865 now has all the attention.

The support for the night was a new band for me, Matt Pearce and the Mutiny. We got songs from the debut album ‘Gotta Get Home’, and from a previous ep, as well as a wonderful cover of ‘Strange Relationship’ by Prince. They played a good 30 minutes and had the crowd on side from the first notes of that Les Paul. Definitely a band I will keep an eye out for in the future.

Just before nine saw Laurence Jones and his band take to the stage to rapturous applause by the excited and eager crowd. He went straight into ‘I’m Waiting’, from the latest self-titled album. It is a full-on in your face track that had the crowd entranced from the start. We then had several tracks all from his latest album, including a wonderful acoustic performance of ‘Long Long Lonely Ride’, and even a song that he wrote for his mum, ‘Beautiful Place’.

Next up we have a few tracks from Laurence’s last album The Truth before a wonderful cover of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘All Along The Watchtower’, even with a slight mishap with Laurence’s amp at the start. Then a couple of older songs including the first song Laurence ever wrote.

They finish a fantastic set with ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’ before they were called back on stage for one more with ‘Live It Up’….

The whole band quite rightly take a bow to a wonderful wall of applause by the lucky people who attended on the night. With Laurence’s exemplary guitar playing and soulful tone, mixed with keyboard solos and general wonderful musicianship, and you have one great show. Until the next time….
