The Darkness // Easter Is Cancelled // Album Review

The Darkness are back with an absolute sumptuous album in the form of Easter Is Cancelled, aging like a fine wine, these guys go from strength to strength as each new recording delves deeper into the hearts and minds of these majestic musicians. The album opener ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Deserves To Die’ is in the vein of a rock opera and takes the listener on an audible rollercoaster as it builds to a crescendo and leaves you breathless.

That’s just for starters, at five minutes twenty-five seconds they’re making a statement of intent here, ‘How Can I Lose Your Love’ has all the charm thatmakes The Darkness what they are, an incandescently British rock band, with Hawkins signature vocals delivery it’s a track that will undoubtedly resonate on the first spin. The album offers all the qualities previously seen throughout The Darkness’ earlier recordings, highly addictive melodies, bitchin’ riffs, and blistering solo work all delivered through their unique humorous storytelling.

Another stand out track on the album is ‘Heavy Metal Lover’ with its nuttier than squirrel shit time changes and manic diversions yet it is all beautifully brought together by a huge hook and The Darkness’ creative ability, it kind of sums up what makes this band so special with their individual identity and single-minded approach to put out good old fashioned Rock ‘N’ Roll on their own terms. The album wraps up with a banger in ‘Choke On It’ and the anthemic ‘We Are The Guitar Men’ which will no doubt go on to be a fan favorite.

Ten timeless songs, one cracking album: Easter In Cancelled is out now via Cooking Vinyl.
