THE 1975 // BEING FUNNY IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE // ALBUM REVIEW

9

A huge proportion of the “charts” these days is filled with come day go day artists that show little musicality or real talent. However, The 1975 by no means fit that bill. “Being Funny In a Foreign Language” is probably one of the finest pieces of pop perfection you are likely to hear this year. Sure the experimental sounds and quirky songwriting are there, but they are packed in a way that produces a most pleasing sound.

The Manchester lads have once again produced a genre-defining LP that, this time, fits on one side of a C90 tape (ahh the good old days!) It kind of feels like they have taken a few attempts at getting this right on their earlier LPs however they have come out the other side and are now just writing pop bangers that come from the heart and soul of the band and they now know that’s exactly what they want to achieve.

I could spend time writing about frontman Matt Healy’s post-millennial angst and how that once again shows through in the songwriting, but I am just not sure that is what the band were going for .. I honestly think they were just trying to write the best pop/rock LP that will lift live audiences out of the post covid era and have them singing and dancing in the aisles. But who am I to criticise…

Huge credit has to go to the band’s newest collaborator Jack Antonoff (Taylor Swift, Lana del Rey amongst many others) His layered vocal techniques and unique production bring a fresh approach to the band’s overall sound whilst retaining their quirky approach to songwriting.

Overall this is an LP that will have you listening from start to finish not just adding a few songs to an online playlist and that has to be a bonus. Hopefully, this will be translated into a fabulous live show on the upcoming tour.

“Being Funny In a Foreign Language” arrives this Friday, Oct 14th via Dirty Hit.
