Steve Vai’s newest and 13th solo album, Inviolate will be out on January 28th via Favored Nations/Mascot Label Group. The virtuoso guitarist, composer and producer is considered by many as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. In over 40 years in the industry, Vai has sold over 15 million records, received three Grammy Awards, and recorded with music legends like Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake and many more.
Inviolate is a nine-song opus that pushes the boundaries of instrumental guitar music. The body of work presents his most focused, streamlined and perhaps invigorating music in years. “It’s very ‘Vai,’ whatever that means,” he says, and then laughs. “Someone else might be better than me at explaining what that is. But it’s just very honest music. Because a lot of my records, they’re long and there’s a lot of concepts and playing around with stories. This one has none of that. This is nine pretty dense all-instrumental compositions that I wanted to capture and record so I could get out there and play them live for people.”
So what does “little” Stevie Vai have to offer this time? Well, Vai is often seen as a guitar player’s behemoth .. the man we all aspire to play like .. and this LP delivers that in spades. Each track has its own intricacies and uniqueness that make this kind of Instrumental LP a joy to behold.
Opener Teeth of the Hydra introduces the mythological beast with twists and turns abound. Yet it’s also beautifully melodic and the production is superb. (Get those headphones on and get lost in the music). As the LP plays you could almost be convinced that this in fact a movie soundtrack with atmospherics aplenty … but always cutting through is the guitar virtuosity we have grown to admire. Take track 7 Greenish Blues .. a homage to the great Gary Moore? …Possibly… but then that Vai magic just pops up as if from nowhere to remind us just what a talent he is. Then we have the Jazz-funk vibe of Candlepower .. without doubt, a personal favourite .. often reminding the listener of the new era of acoustic players that seem to play with wizardry some can only dream of .. and of course, that is Vai in his element.
Is this LP for everyone? A difficult question to answer to be honest .. many will admire the musicality and sonic picture that we get here. If that is the case then I believe Vai has done his job and done it well …. If you are a huge fan of the Jazz/Funk genre then there’s plenty to offer for you .. If you like to listen to something that is just a little bit different .. again you are on to a winner ..
