Mexican duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela are back with their latest offering to the six-string gods in the form of Mettavolution. I can still remember the first time I saw these two live, in the flesh and up close and personal, it was a mesmerizing experience. I have always had great respect for Classical guitarists and Flamenco artists, the ability to play guitar the way God intended I guess and at the highest level is simply a beautiful thing to watch. Every time I hear Rodrigo Y Gabriela I am transported back to that night at the Ards International Guitar Festival where I was lucky enough to sit within touching distance of where they played.
Mettavolution is a beautiful evolution of these fine artists, long gone are the days of Metallica covers and the likes which brought them to the fore in the Rock / Metal world, instead, you have highly complex and melodically sublime compositions that envelope the listener across the entirety of their recordings. The finest quality songwriting is apparent across this short and sweet album, only seven tracks but each carries the intent of the punch of a heavyweight boxer.
Breathtaking at times and sublime the next, finesse and restraint when needed and drama when called upon, Mettavolution has it all, the passion oozing out from the very heart of the two perfectly in tune musicians. The understanding between Rodrigo Y Gabriela is flawless, captivating and something everyone should experience at least once in their lives.
Out now, the Mettavolution has arrived.
