RICHMOND, VA | FEBRUARY 20, 2021: Today, Richmond VA Punk band Talk Me Off has released their latest EP, Abyss, in partnership with Smartpunk Records, Swamp Cabbage, Gunner, and Wallride Records. With two lead singers of the opposite sex, Talk Me Off brings a fresh new sound to a traditional skate-punk scene with lyrics relatable to anyone living in 2021 with their fierce tracks such as “Alone in the Dark” is an apathetically punk song about feeling content with nothingness in the end, or “Counting Digits” which hails a big F-U to the diet industry. On the EP release today, the band collectively shares:
“After over a year of frustrations with the world around us, countless shows canceled, and just straight up uncertainty, we decided to release 4 songs (and a sick cover) that were written from these dark times. We’d like to formally present to you our third release, the Abyss EP. We all think this is some of our strongest work to date and hope you all will feel the same.” – Ryan Cacophony & Talk Me Off
Talk Me Off is a punk band out of Richmond, Virginia that formed in 2017. Ryan Cacophony and Holly Herzog had met performing in a Screeching Weasel cover band for a children’s hospital charity. After throwing the idea of starting a new band around, they got Christian Moquin involved and just a few months later released the first self-titled EP, released on Doctor and Mechanic Recordings and Between the Days Records. The songs had themes of bad relationships and terrible mental health. There were some East Coast/Canada tours that followed, playing with bands like Off With Their Heads, Night Birds, The Lillingtons, and The Lawrence Arms. In 2020, they released their first full-length record Cursed after signing to Smartpunk Records, with the help of Say-10 Records and Gunner Records. The pandemic hit as soon as the record was released, which led to no shows but lots of writing. Their new EP, Abyss, will be released on April 20, 2021, in partnership with Smartpunk Records, Swamp Cabbage, Gunner, and Wallride Records.
Smartpunk has been a recognizable name in the scene for a long time (remember that sponsored Warped Tour stage?!), but after exchanging several hands and countless ideas of what it could and should be, we decided to start a record label in 2016 with the main idea to focus only solely on reissuing records that have been out of print or never on vinyl. After all, we’re a label of vinyl dorks, ourselves. After releasing Set Your Goals‘ “Mutiny” and Gameface‘s “Good”, we started to venture out into signing newer bands. We’ve since been actively balancing in between both worlds—putting out some amazing music from friends and bands that rocks, and reissuing older titles, while also partnering with other incredible labels in our scene and doing exclusive color variants of their releases.
Since forming the record label, Smartpunk Records has released timeless albums such as Less Than Jake’sAnthem, Northbound’s Soul Kiss, RIVALS’ Damned Soul and upcoming sophomore release Sad Looks Pretty on Me, Clearbody’s One More Day, and legendary punk-crossover group Bandaid Brigade’s I’m Separate.
