Reese Wynans, Acclaimed ivory tinkler and Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall Of Fame Inductee has finally stepped out from the shadows and released his first solo album, Sweet Release.
What can you say about Wynans that hasn’t already been said before; his work with the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble laid the foundation for modern day Blues, his signature Hammond Organ sound and mercurial hands just leave you aghast and to catch him live is an absolute privilege. Sweet Release is also the first album produced by none other than Joe Bonamassa, Blues Royalty. Of course this opens up the door for Wynans to involve many a friend and colleague on this fine recording such as Joe Bonamassa, Vince Gill, Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), Jack Pearson (Allman Brothers), Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Keb’ Mo’, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie), along with Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon of Double Trouble, and many more!
The album kicks off with ‘Crossfire’ the SRV classic off In Step, Stevie’s last studio album with Wynans, Kenny Wayne Shepherd on the six string doing a sterling job filling in for Stevie. ‘Say What’ follows, an instrumental and again Wynans silky fingers just set the track alight alongside some classic guitar wizardry. Each track is a sublime education of the level of cool that Reese and his fellow musicians just exhume in their everyday lives. A beautiful collection of some of the fines Blues tracks recorded, executed perfectly by some of the modern day greats. Production is on point so you can just loose yourself in the majesty of the heart and soul poured out across twelve killer tracks.
I was fortunate to capture Wynans perform alongside Bonamassa whilst on his British Blues Explosion Tour and it was an amazing sight, hearing the work on this album just brings the memories flooding back of that very night. Wynans loose and colourful style on the keys just mesmerises with each and every brush stroke. A bucket list moment if you will, I never expected in my lifetime to witness Wynans live, watching SRV & Double Trouble on VHS all those years ago was one thing but now sitting in front of this master is another.
Sweet Release is a more than a collection of fine recordings brought to life once again. It’s like hearing them all over again for the first time. A Sweet Release indeed.
