“He had been up all night and he came upstairs. It was like 7:00 in the morning and he grabbed my hand and said ‘follow me’, and so I followed him downstairs. The sun was coming through the stained-glass windows and he pressed play, and that song came on and I looked at him and I got teary-eyed. And that was it. He didn’t have to say anything.” — Susannah Melvoin
Minneapolis, MN – August 27, 2020 – Today, The Prince Estate in partnership with Warner Records, released “Forever In My Life (Early Vocal Studio Run-Through)”, a previously unheard recording from Prince’s legendary vault that will be featured on the expanded reissue of Prince’s iconic Sign O’ The Times out September 25.
“Forever In My Life (Early Vocal Studio Run-Through)” was recorded at Prince’s Galpin Boulevard home studio on August 8, 1986, by engineer Susan Rogers.
The song features Prince lowering his guard and exposing vulnerability in his music. At the time it was recorded he was engaged to Susannah Melvoin and the song stands as a testament to his feelings and outlook during this formative period in his life.
Based on a simple recording he made with an acoustic guitar, Prince expanded the song using drums, bass, guitar embellishments and multiple layers of his vocals, including a scratch track that was not featured in the original release.
In addition, today The Prince Estate launched the podcast miniseries Prince: The Story of Sign O’ The Times. Produced with 89.3 The Current, the miniseries marks the next chapter in the Official Prince Podcast feed and is being created by the same team that crafted the Webby Award-nominated podcast Prince: The Story of 1999. Hosted by The Current’s Andrea Swensson – an author and historian of Minnesota music – Prince: The Story of Sign O’ The Times will track the two years leading up to the epochal double album’s release, tracking the many twists, turns and abandoned projects, featuring vault track previews and interviews with key collaborators and confidants. The first episode begins with Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman as they reflect on Prince’s prolific Dream Factory period, with additional insights from engineer Susan Rogers and musicians Eric Leeds, Atlanta Bliss, Dr. Fink and BrownMark.
