MOOKIE BETTS – THE NEW SINGLE FROM VICTORY KICKS – OUT NOW
Mookie Betts, the brand new single and video by London alt-indie band Victory Kicks is out now and available to stream and download from all music stores and streaming services.
Welcome to the pre-release of Mookie Betts, the brand new single by London alt-indie band Victory Kicks. Recorded at home in the spring of 2020, the song is about being in a band during the lockdown and about an imagined and distant moment when together becoming possible again, and how that might feel. Mookie Betts is the lead single from the band’s seventh album Free the Night which was recorded at home during the Coronavirus pandemic and will be released in 2021. It features ten new songs about life, love and loss during the lockdown, as well as the redemptive power of Baseball.
The song was written, recorded and mixed by songwriter John Sibley in a bedroom in South-West London. It was mastered by indie-folk singer-songwriter and label mate Sam Beard.
Mookie Betts is the first song to be released from the forthcoming Victory Kicks album ‘Free the Night’, out later this year.
The artwork for the album is a photo taken during an Oakland A’s game at the Coliseum in Oakland, California during a road trip to California in 2019.
Mookie Betts is the first single to be released by Victory Kicks since On & On from the 2020 album Lovers in Peacetime.
Mookie Betts and the other songs that will make up the forthcoming album were recorded entirely during lockdown with a minimal DIY setup in John’s bedroom at home in London.
Mookie Betts takes its name from the LA Dodgers and former Red Sox Right-Fielder and no doubt future hall-of-fame inductee, whose performances in near empty major league baseball grounds were one of the few highlights of 2020.
Victory Kicks create driving, melodic and atmospheric guitar music, drawing inspiration from the likes of Spoon, The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile, Wilco, The National, Death Cab for Cutie, Stephen Malkmus, Guided by Voices, The Walkmen, British Sea Power and Kraftwerk.
The band began in early 2013 as a home recording project featuring London based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist John Sibley. Early EPs and albums of catchy lo-fi indie rock gained favourable critical attention and radio play in both the UK and the US, and the band became known for releasing an almost continuous stream of home recorded alt-rock barely pausing between releases.
Having begun as a solo project, recording and releasing records out of John’s living room, over the years Victory Kicks has come to sit somewhere between that and a collaborative band with regular contributions from a rotating cast of friends and members of other London based acts. These include singer/songwriter and guitarist Sam Beard, and members of London based bands The Young Flood, WEM and Plastic Barricades.
