Mongrel Records are a South African label dedicated to promoting the best in underground Rock and Metal that S.A. has to offer, Fangs Vol I gives us a taster of what is going on across the pond and whets the appetite for a first-class quality scene barely exposed further afield, till now.

You get fourteen gnarly tracks from fourteen very different bands all doing their thing with 100% intensity and you have it all wrapped up in one fine package to devour. Right from the off Ruff Majik lay down the law with their full-throttle track ‘All You Need Is Speed’ and from there you are taken on a rollercoaster or various styles, levels of intensity and quality that you are going to be immediately hooked.

The S.A.scene was little known to me mostly till recent years and through various gigs, festivals I got the opportunity to enjoy a sampler of what this vastly different geographical landscape had to offer. Bloodstock opened the door to Deity’s Muse who also feature here, I had the pleasure of interviewing the guys and a nicer bunch of lads you could not meet. We may be 8,000 miles apart but the passion, the love of music and the drive to succeed and the challenges are the same for an artist in S.A. as it is in the UK or the US, barring obvious geographical challenges reaching broader audiences their graft is the same and the daily grind to gain recognition for their craft is no different. What you do tend to get though is a fresher and more unique approach to songwriting, external influences in areas like S.A. creep in and you feel the value for your money with such bands as they go outside the usual boxes to create a unique voice that their S.A heritage brings to the game. Multiple sub-genres of Metal are thrown your way on this fine collection and there will absolutely be something for everyone on this hefty taster, an eye-opener for sure and one you should dive into wholeheartedly and embrace the chaos that ebb’s and flows from these South African veins. Who knows you might just uncover your fav new gem.

Fangs Vol I is out May 22nd via Mongrel Records.
