MIKE STOCKSDALE RELEASES NEW ALBUM, ‘IF YOU ASK ME I’LL TELL YOU’
After dropping a trio of new singles in the last two months, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Mike Stocksdale has released his brand new album. If You Ask Me I’ll Tell You is on all streaming platforms now, and is a timeless collection of warm, earthy indie-folk melodies and deft acoustic songwriting that showcases Stocksdale’s yearning voice and keen ear for a poetic lyric.
“If You Ask Me I’ll Tell You is a collection of tunes written over the past three years and self-produced in my tiny home studio in Culver City, CA,” explains Stocksdale. “I’d recorded and released a few of the songs as full band singles, but they never really hit me the way I had hoped. It became clear I needed to strip things down and stay true to the acoustic performances I was used to playing live, while adding subtle production ideas to create a space and a vibe. The album ended up sounding somewhere between The Tallest Man On Earth, Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, John Craigie’s No Rain, No Rose, and I’m happy with that. It’s not perfect, but neither am I. The sound of humans is disappearing from recorded music, and I’m proud that this record sounds like people instead of computers. There are subtleties in the playing, tempo shifts, dynamics, sliding pitches. Human things. The songs run the range of sweet love stories to political anthems to introspective life affirming realizations. Somehow, they all come together and make sense.”
Mike Stocksdale is an artist you’ve listened to your whole life – or at least it feels that way. There is a familiarity in his melodies, the warmth and grit of his guitar playing and the honest stories he tells that hits home. His ability to translate his personal experiences into relatable lyrics and choruses is a reminder of the timeless power of honest and organic songwriting in an era of quick-hit shapeshifting and blurred genre lines.
