Mercutio– Chaos is King – EP Review

Title track ‘Chaos is King’ is an unadulterated rush of catchy guitar melody and rhythmic drumming.  The urgency of the message is carried through solid vocals that melt over the blazing tune with a charismatic and speedy Scottish lilt.  This is a get-up-and-get-on type of song.   There is no time for ruminating on the inevitable tower moments that life throws at individuals but the power is in connecting with others, creating positive from negative, and keeping that chaos in check.

‘Alex’ has a bereft yet reassuring heartfelt quality.  It’s an interesting and compelling song with lyrics to match and the emotion and volume build throughout with an extra-terrestrial chorus that gets somewhat lodged in the human brain.  ‘The Ghost That is You’ full of love and torment, is a slower track again.  It has an electric-acoustic feel to start and the vocals take center stage, this time with the added addition of female vocals (cue Jodie Steele.)  Full of duets and great harmonies they’re fighting for this together.  This band is undeniably tight.

Perhaps the most prominent track on the EP, ‘Terraferma’ combines a more electronic approach with a striking voice which is reminiscent of Pulp in places, though the Muse-like influences are stark in this one.  A little over half way through, the vocal effects are akin to an almost chanting hell-choir, then just like that BOOM, cut, it has ended.

An EP full of ubiquitous atmosphere with lyrics that are thought-provokingly poetic and vocals that merge into instrumental sounds in all the right places.  You will want to listen on repeat.  Chaos is King EP is released Thursday 10th December 2020.
