Mercutio // Antagonist // Album Review

The 4th of June sees the release of alt-rockers Mercutio’s debut album “Antagonist”, jam-packed full of great tracks that will give you something to rock out to. Opening track “Where The Pain Lives” is a banger; gritty riffs, thumping drums and a buzzing bass will pique your interest and that’s just the start, as the track progresses the Wild’s vocals are absolutely killer and the rhythm of the song rises and falls with his singing, a great start. “Playtime” is a bass-heavy punk style track with crushing drums, grinding riffs combined with Wild screaming, snarled, and near-spoken vocals give the song a nice kick, this will be a massive hit live.

“Chaos Is King” is the polar opposite of its predecessor; it has a real radio-friendly feel with its rocking beat that is amazing, this is the total package, brilliant guitars, drums, bass, and cracking vocals, a real track of the album contender. “Alex” is a slow, morose track that runs the gamut of highs and lows, a decent enough song. “Slap Bang” is a funky little number lead by a pulsating bass with pounding drums and groovy guitars, if this doesn’t tickle your fancy then there is no hope for you. “Terraferma” is a really catchy song with an air of familiarity, you’ve heard it a million times before but you haven’t really, the chorus will hook you big time, guaranteed to be ingrained in your head from the first listen, throw in the cool guitars and you have yourself a belter.

“C-Word” has an edgier feel with the increased tempo, dirty riffs, and Wild’s frantic vocals giving you possibly the best track on the album. “A Part Of Me” slows things right down with an acoustic guitar and soft drums while Wild lays it all down with some killer vocals. “Shed Your Skin” is another that will get major airplay, it will appeal to the masses as it has a Kasabian/Kaizer Chiefs kind of funk with soaring chorus’ but maybe a little grittier. “The Ghost That Is You” is for all intents and purposes a power ballad, a rousing opening quickly drops Wild’s hushed spoken vocals that trade-off with Jodie Steele offering the female vocals, the song rises and falls through the verses and chorus’ as it leads to the final crescendo as the track closes, killer tune. “Revolution Station” closes out the album with a call to arms as the title suggests, a heavy grinding riff underpins the track with Wild screaming and roaring his way throughout, a fantastic way to finish the album off.

“Antagonist” is out on 4th June everywhere and is one not to be missed.
