September 15, 2020 (Seattle, WA) – Lily Cornell Silver has released Episode 9 of her IGTV series Mind Wide Open and welcomes Dr. Ursula Whiteside of NowMattersNow.org. The new episode has reached nearly 20K views.
Dr. Whiteside is co-developer of NowMattersNow.org, and one of the first psychologists to publicly disclose that she has experienced suicide ideation. The NowMattersNow website writes, “She thinks that lots of people have suicidal thoughts and yet it does not define them – or limit what they can achieve, adding in the #ZeroSuicide.”
Lily says, “During Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, I wanted to bring attention to people in the field who are dedicated to not only reducing the stigma around suicide ideation, but also adding to the conversation with tools for those that struggle.”
In their conversation, Lily and Dr. Whiteside discuss suicide and suicide ideation. Both Lily and Dr. Whiteside openly discuss their own struggles, and how those conversations can help destigmatize suicidal thoughts, and what can be done to manage them.
Dr. Whiteside shares dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) strategies created to help with suicidal ideation and other intense emotions and she noted in the episode, “There are 10 Million people every year who seriously consider suicide in a given year, and that’s a travesty. I would say on the other hand, the vast majority of people who consider suicide never go on to harm themselves. We are surviving and we need as many examples as possible of how people do that.”
Lily recently shared her own story with the struggle on her Instagram.
As in previous episodes, Lily continues on her mission to destigmatize conversations around mental health and since its launch in July, Mind Wide Open and Lily have been featured in Rolling Stone, Variety, NME, ET, and the Seattle Times among others.
Previous episodes featured Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Dr. Laura van Dernoot-Lipsky of the Trauma Stewardship in Seattle, Dr. Marc Brackett, author of Permission to Feel and founding Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, TikTok/Instagram influencer Sir Carter, Guns N’ Roses bassist, Duff McKagan and Monique Minahan, founder of The Grief Practice.
